A 28-year-old worker at a the Classic Hosiery company building at 33 Mulberry Street in Middletown, NY escaped serious injury Tuesday afternoon when he fell about 30 feet down an elevator shaft, MidHudsonNews reports.
Yosef Lefkowitz told Middletown Fire Chief Sam Barone that he pushed the button to open the elevator door and didn’t look before stepping in. The elevator wasn’t there and he fell, landing on his back.
Hatzolah members from Kiryas Yoel along with Mobil-Life treated the man, and transported him to the hospital.
A Hatzolah member who was on the scene told YWN that the elevator shaft had been used as a garbage pit for many years, and there had been cardboard boxes and other junk at the bottom. “The mud, and junk at the bottom of the shaft, saved this persons life,” the member told YWN.
The city fire and code enforcement departments are looking into the situation.
