UPDATED: 60,000 Without Power In Rockaways & Five Towns – POWER RESTORED!

1:55PM EST: (UPDATE POSTED BELOW) Due to an incident at a substation in Valley Stream, approximately 60,000 people in the Rockaways are without power from Far Rockaway through Nassau/Town of Hempstead LI. All railroad crossings and traffic lights are not working, and many Yeshivas and schools currently have no power.

The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) said the blackout started at 1:30PM and a LIPA official told CBS2 HD that there were no backup generators running in the Rockaways when the problem occurred, thus leading to the outage.

Additionally, there is no “A Train” service in both directions between the Howard Beach-JFK Airport Station and the Far Rockaway-Mott Avenue/Rockaway Park-Beach 116th Street Stations.

YWN urges all drivers to please exercise extra caution while crossing intersections.

UPDATE 2:50PM EST: According to CBS2 HD, all power has been restored.

A)My profession necessitates constantly checking for incoming orders and as such I’m in front of the computer for many hours. B)As to your second question, being that it was a rather short blackout in daylight hours I was assuming and I am probably correct that there was BH very little bittul Torah. Most classrooms and Batei Medrashos have windows.

Having said that I forgive you for your lack of being dan lekaf zechus. Be well!
