YWN regrets to inform you of the petirah of HaRav Sheftel Neuberger, zt’l, Sheftel Meir ben Naftoli Halevi, Nasi of Yeshivas Ner Yisroel. Rav Sheftel, z’tl, has been sick for the past year.
Rav Neuberger was the son of Rav Naftali Neuberger, z’tl, president of Ner Yisroel for many years. Following Rav Naftali’s death in 2005, Rav Sheftel succeeded his father as Nasi.
Rav Sheftel’s devotion to the yeshiva and the Baltimore community as a whole was legendary. He was one of the most well-known and beloved figures in Baltimore’s frum community.
He was also famed for his beautiful and inspiring tefillos as a ba’al tefillah. Many people flocked to Ner Yisrael for the Yamim Noraim just to hear Rav Sheftel serve as the Ba’al Tefilloh.
Rav Sheftel left behind his rebbetzin and children, as well as his siblings: Rav Shraga Neuberger, Reb Yaakov Neuberger, Reb Yitzchok Neuberger, and Rav Ezra Neuberger.

ברוך דיין האמת . Rav Sheftel ז”ל was a true leader. He was accessible, knowledgeable, wise, מעורב אם הבריאות, a well rounded ת”ח and a true Mentch. Klal Yisroel has just lost another jewel in its crown. May Mashiach come soon so that we, as a nation can greet all the Gedolim from this generation and the past. במהרה בימינו אמן ומחה ה’ דמעה מעל כל פנים.

ONE OF MOST GRACIOUS MEN I HAVE EVER MET.
When I enrolled my son in the Yeshiva HE SUPPORTED working out different programs for my son. When I was in town sometimes unannounced I had to knock on his door regarding important school issues, he would bring me in first feed me then spoke with me at length.
A man of honor he would call me to tell me how my son was doing and even as an excuse asked about the reliability of the Kaskruth in my area.
ALWAYS AVAILABLE
ALWAYS KIND
ALWAYS ACCOMMODATING AND GRACIOUS.
ALWAYS SMILING.
I will soaring miss him.

BD”E. You haven’t lived until you’ve heard Melech Rachamim during Musaf at Ner Yisroel.
I just returned from the bais avel for HaRav Sheftel Meir ben HaRav Naftoli HaLevi Neuberger. I told the avelim two stories about Rav Sheftel that were told to me by his mother, Rebitzen Judith Neuberger A.H. over 50 years ago.
Story 1.
It was mid-December in the late forties and Rebitzen Neuberger was traveling on a city bus with young Sheftel from their Forest Park neighborhood to downtown Baltimore to do some shopping. A lady entered the bus and sat down next to Sheftel. She inquired, “And what will Santa Claus bring you for Christmas?” A puzzled Sheftel looked at the lady and responded, “Who is Santa Claus?”
Story 2.
From an early age, young Sheftel would daven shacharis with the Ner Israel yeshiva. One morning, when he returned home for breakfast, he was very excited. He told his mother in astonishment, “Mommy, all the talmidei chachomim were in the Bais Medrash and they asked ME what the letter was in the sefer Torah!”
May his memory be a blessing for Klal Yisroel and may he be a melitz Yosher for us.
