Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, has told associates that he believes President Donald Trump committed impeachable offenses and that he is pleased that Democrats are moving to impeach him, believing that it will make it easier to purge him from the party, according to the NY Times. The House is voting Wednesday to formally charge Trump with inciting violence against the country.
Fox News is reporting the same, stating that McConnell “is done: and “furious” with Trump. Fox states that McConnell has shared with associates that impeachment will help rid the Republican Party of Trump and his movement.
It is unclear how McConnell would vote in an impeachment trial, should House Democrats vote to impeach Trump. It is not clear at this point whether McConnell would vote to convict.
The House plans to vote on one article of impeachment Wednesday charging Trump with “incitement of insurrection,” as it races toward making him the first President in history to be impeached twice.

I would ordinarily say I respect his decision but after nearly 4 years of pandering to Trump, its hard to feel good about his deathbed redemption. Likewise, Biden and his team need to immediately make clear they will not tolerate any of the BLM or “progressive” protests along the line of the seemingly endless Seattle and Portland protests or they will only intensify the polarization evident over the past few months.

Let’s see if McConnell votes for impeachment.
Let’s take a look at this carefully.
First of all it’s the New York times reporting so who knows.
Second of all, maybe McConnell realizes his time is just about up now that he’s the minority leader for the next two years and that he’s probably on his way out of the Senate anyway. He is a Washington insider, part of the swamp and he would not want to fight the system, ESPECIALLY for a system he doesn’t really believe in.
Thirdly, and most far-fetched would be is maybe he’s trying to goad the Democrats into doing this so that they can show their true colors. Many people, even those who truly believe the president incited the riot, something which is not true, are very upset about the Democrats gaveling in and out of recess just to make hay, For something that will never happen because there’s not enough time. Clearly it’s being looked at, as a political stunt and nothing else.
I wish I could tell you my third option is the most sensible one but McConnell wouldn’t do something like that. I don’t think he’s smart enough.
Trump will get the Republican nomination in 2024 and will lead the Republican Party to a historic blowout. The only way to prevent that is to convict Trump after he is impeached. McConnell knows that.
Assuming he is not convicted, impeached twice is absolutely no different than impeached once. It is just evidence of a polarized congress that is acting out. “I hate you!” “I still hate you!” So what? All this talk is just journalistic sound bites that appeal to people that are already convinced. What will make a difference is if members of his party vote for impeachment. If members of your own party change their vote, that is evidence of a failed presidency.
