The National Football League’s Washington franchise will change the Redskins name and logo, the team announced Monday in a statement.
The new name of the team was not revealed.
The announcement comes just days after the team said that a “thorough review” of the name would be conducted. The name has long been denounced by Native American groups as an ethnic slur.
“That review has begun in earnest,” Monday’s statement said. “As part of this process, we want to keep our sponsors, fans and community apprised of our thinking as we go forward. Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review.”

The name originated in Boston, and there is reason to suspect that the “love” of Indian names in Boston (also the original home of the baseball “Braves”) had to do with non-Indians who dressed up as Indians and engaged in serious criminal mischief (such as refusing to pay taxes and dumping tea into the harbor and eventually overthrowing the lawful government). One may note that the only source of employment in Washington is the same industry that the 18th century “Mohawks” reviled
2. Polls suggest the Indians are much less likely to see the term as offensive than do non-Indian professional activists. on the other hand the potential fan-base in Washington consists largely of liberal Democrats, and a team that isn’t very good should avoid alienating its fans
