ywn logo1.jpg*Governor David Paterson performed some executive duties from his Harlem home Wednesday, a day after undergoing laser eye surgery, but legislators said he won’t return to the office until after Memorial Day.

*A geographer for the City Planning Department has calculated that the city is smaller than originally thought, the New York Times reported today. The geographer found that the city is 304.8 square miles, about 17 square miles smaller than originally thought.

*Authorities say one person has died in a Brooklyn accident involving a tractor-trailer truck and two cars. Two other people have suffered serious injuries. Fire officials say the accident occurred on the Kosciuszko Bridge at 5:30 a.m. Thursday. The bridge connects Brooklyn and Queens.

*Police say they have arrested a 16-year-old Brooklyn high school student for threatening to kill three people — a teacher, another student and a McDonald’s employee. The boy was arrested on charges of making terroristic threats and aggravated harassment. He has not been identified by name. Police said a teacher at James Madison High School spotted a note Wednesday on a desk shared by the student and two peers. The teacher then contacted security officers.

*Camden police say they found 48 guns, including a submachine gun, in the home of a murder suspect. Authorities said the arsenal in Daniel Scott Winstanley’s home included 47 military-style rifles, 10,000 rounds of ammunition and a cache of bayonets, knives and swords.

*The small plane that crashed near an Ocean County airport last weekend was apparently headed for an emergency landing when it plummeted into a forest, killing two, according to a report in the Courier Post.

*Fuel prices and economic uncertainty appear to be putting the brakes on travel during the Memorial Day holiday weekend in New Jersey for the first time since the 9/11 attacks. AAA Mid-Atlantic estimated about 45,000 fewer Garden State residents will travel this holiday weekend than during the same period in 2007.

*BALTIMORE, Md. — State adult protective services officials say they have removed the remaining residents of an unlicensed assisted living facility in Baltimore where a mentally ill resident died in May. The house on Halcyon Avenue had been operating for nearly two years and had been home for as many as seven people with mental disabilities and other health problems. Officials say the facility was operated by two people without proper training.

*ARNOLD, Md. — An Anne Arundel County fire official says a man was taken to an area hospital in critical condition after he fell from a sailboat racing in the Magothy River. It happened around 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Arnold area. Lt. Frank Fennell says the man in his 60s fell from the lead boat into the river. He says a life ring was thrown to the man, but by the time they got him back on board he was in cardiac arrest.

*BALTIMORE, Md. — The operator of the regional power grid, PJM Interconnection, says demand for power could cause blackouts in Maryland by 2011 unless a planned multistate power line wins regulatory approval.

*SILVER SPRING, Md. —  WASHINGTON – Md. 29 has reopened after a head-on collision closed the road south of White Oak Thursday morning. The southbound lanes are completely open, but only two northbound lanes are getting by to the left near New Hampshire Avenue. The head-on collision that forced the closure occurred before 7 a.m. It
closed the road at Burnt Mills Avenue.

*BALTIMORE, Md. — A mortgage bank being sued by Baltimore is alleging that the city’s practice of selling houses with tax liens for unpaid water bills or other municipal fees is responsible for a recent increase in foreclosures, not the bank’s practices.

*LAUREL, Md. – Two children are okay after one of them decided to take their mom’s car out for a spin. The joyride began Wednesday afternoon when a woman parked her car outside a home on Ashford Boulevard near Oxford Drive to talk to a babysitter. While the mother was outside, a 5-year-old in the car got the key out of an ashtray and stuck the key into the ignition, putting the car in neutral.
