Travelling to Eretz Yisroel? Read This Public Service Announcement

customs.jpgWith many people travelling to Eretz Yisroel in the next day or two for Lag Ba’Omer, please read the following joint public service announcement by YWN & the Center For Community Resources.

In the past few days, there have been dozens of US Customs Border Agents stationed in the NYC airports, and are aggressively searching people carrying “undeclared” large amounts of money.

According to multiple eyewitnesses, the agents are stationed on the “jet-ways” – which is after one goes through check-in and security, and walking to their designated gate. Countless people have been taken to side rooms, and stripped-searched for money. One eyewitness told YWN that a police dog specially trained to sniff cash, was brought ON an airplane.

THIS IS THE LAW: Travelers leaving or entering the U.S. are required to report monetary instruments (i.e. currency or checks) valued at $10,000 or more on a “Report of International Transportation of Currency or Monetary Instruments”. Failure to declare currency in amounts of over $10,000 can result in its seizure.

Additionally, YWN reported on Tuesday [HERE] that customs officials in Ben-Gurion International Airport are targeting Chareidi travelers, pulling them over to the side upon their arrival for a thorough inspection.

Apparently, travelers with a chareidi appearance are being selected by customs agents in an apparent operation to single them out among other travelers. The source is quoted as explaining the operation is intended to apprehend people carrying illegal funds into the country.

  1. Isn’t this racial profiling?
How should a meshulach bring the money to eretz yisroel?
Also, what happens if someone declares 20,000 dollars, are they taxed on the spot?

  2. If something is done legally there is really nothing to worry about. The normal way to transfer funds is by wire or check. That’s what banks are for.Since there are laws limiting how much money can be taken out of the country, and there are good reasons for them, and the frum (chassidic) are known to carry cash, this is happening now, more than before due to economic recession problems. People who deal in cash hide the transactions in order to by-pass tax laws and under-report income and sales;and to hide illegal businesses. Unfortutunately many chareidim do this chillul Hashem.Years ago when Jews were not permitted to do certain legal businesses there was no other option and that was all right to do it by Halocho standards for survival. However when there is a law that applies equally to all, our people should obey just like eveyone else.

  3. ayin tov: There are no racial profile laws in Israel. If there were then they would never be able to pull over Arabs just because they are Arabs.

  4. ayin tov: if the meshulach is legit, then the insitution is a nonprofit right? if thats the case, taxes work way differently than they do for a private citizen “owning” the money. if they dont want to declare it, obviously theres something fishy going on, meshulach or not.

  5. maybe somone shoud let them know that olmert is now in israel hiding in the kneset bldg.
if you aren’t doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about

  6. #4 IS A FARBERNTER MISNAGID.
THE MISNAGDIM ARE A CROOKED AS A SEPHARDIC SHOFAR.
THE CHASIDIM ARE HEILIGA YIDDEN. THEY DONT RELY ON FLIMSY HETEIRIM DO EAT KOL DOVOR HAOSUR.

  7. US currency has a metal strip in each bill which is visible to the x-ray machine & possibly the metal detector. They don’t need a dog.

  8. Every body relax and stop fighting, no body means to profile chasidim or litvish, like they do in eretz yiroel to the arabs yimachshimom. the reason they are checking chareidim is because they busted a huge drug(extecy) scandal from israel and thety caught some frume (they just looked frum) bochorim carring the money back and force. they caught one carrier and thats how they found out about the whole operation. so if youre not in to bad bad things then you have nothing to worry about!

  9. משלי פרק כח
    יד) אַשְׁרֵי אָדָם מְפַחֵד תָּמִיד
Was not written for “Cash Carriers” and “Drug Dealers.”

The source for all the negative activity is:
תלמוד בבלי מסכת קידושין דף כט עמוד א
רבי יהודה אומר: כל שאינו מלמד את בנו אומנות – מלמדו ליסטות. ליסטות ס”ד? אלא, כאילו מלמדו ליסטות
Rabbosi, it’s time to wake up:
    רד”ק תהלים פרק קכח
ב) יגיע כפיך . כי הטובה היא שיחיה ממלאכתו ולא יהנה מאחרים, כל זמן שיוכל ליגע עצמו במלאכה. ואם תחיה בזאת ההנהגה, אשריך וטוב לך,

  10. Just came back from Eretz Yisrael yesterday (Weds. 05/22/08). First time ever I was stopped by customs and yes their focus seemed to be on cash as it was a specific question asked. Noticed that they inspected an unusual number of folks coming off the El Al flight.
