Levaya of Hagaon HaRav Mordechai Marcus ZT”L, Rov of Lakewood Minyan of Flatbush

YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of Hagaon HaRav Mordechai Marcus ZT”L, the Rov of the Beth Medrash Govoha Minyan (Lakewood Minyan) in Flatbush.

The Levaya was held at 11:00AM today in Lakewood.

A Talmid related to YWN: “The Niftar would spend his summers in Camp Horim where his wife was the secretary. This is the summer home of Mesivta of Long Beach. He was always shown a lot of kavod by the Roshei Yeshiva. He would often give shiurim on the sugyos being learned by the Yeshiva which would display his bekius in all of Shas plus his lomdus. He would also give a shmuess to the entire yeshiva and answer shailos with patience and a smile. Despite his physical limitations, we would see his mesirus nefesh in coming to the Beis Medrash for davening. Otherwise, he spent his entire day learning behasmada rabba on his porch. He was a true example for us of an exalted Talmid Chacham.”

One person told YWN the following: “I was privileged to have learned in Emek Halocho when R. Marcus was a magid shiur. I heard shiurim from him on Maseches Chullin. His ability to pinpoint the essence of the words of the rishonim to develop a singular line of reasoning to apply to numerous sugyos thus negating individual questions posed by the achronim, was pure genius. Yet, he always demonstrated his incredible humility. Whenever we would suggest something in learning he would pause, stroke his chin and say, “Hmm, could be…” and only then would he point out our misunderstanding of the subject. His wife once mentioned to me that often times when he was learning at home she observed him deeply engrossed in five different topics simultaneously. A loss of a great treasure!”

  1. I was once privileged to hear from him a shiur in halacha. He showed a unique ability to distinguish between halacha lmaaseh and the chumra while preferring the chumra he allowed that l’halacha it was not required.
So unique! Such a pleasure. His passing is indeed a great loss!

  2. At Yeshivas Rabbeinu Yaakov Yosef (RJJ), Rav Markus z”l learned for a while in the class of HaRav Varshavchik zt”l.
Several years later, I learned in the Rav’s class.
Before Sukkos, HaRav Varshavchik told us a story.
On East Broadway, it was like a “chicken market” bustling with hundreds of people on line and not on line approaching the Arba Minim stands which were one next to another.
    It was a real balagan.
But HaRav Varshavchik had something else on his mind. He remembered that years ago he had said a pshat to explain a difficult Rambam, and he couldn’t remember what he had said.
He approached one of the sellers, who was engrossed in showing people his products, and asked him if, perhaps, he remembered the pshat.
Without batting an eyelash, he immediately said over the pshat to the Rav.
Yussie Ausfresser, who was in the class with me, immediately responded that it must have been Mordechai Marcus.
HaRav Varshavchik smilled and nodded his head in agreement.
What a great loss for Klal Yisroel.
    Yehi zichro baruch.
