Russia Sending Battleships to the Region

putNot waiting until the US fires the first shot, a defiant Russia is determined to get Washington to back down and refrain from launching a military strike against Syria, Moscow’s close ally and business partner. The Interfax news agency is reporting that due to tensions in the Mideast region, it is sending a battleship and an anti-submarine vessel to strengthen its presence in the region. The vessels are expected to arrive in the coming days. The report is based on statements from members of Russian military general staff, citing the need to “make adjustments” in the nation’s naval force in the region.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that launching an attack against Syria would be a “tragic error” and he feels that it may result in a regional conflict.

Russia this week evacuated all of its citizens who wished to leave Syria.

  1. Russia doesn’t own a battleship (nor does anyone else, they were proven to be largely obsolete during World War II). They were very large and very slow.

Other news sources say the ship is a Cruiser (a much smaller ship), and the Russians maintain it is “routine” and not related to the current crisis.

  2. I don’t understand Russia. 2 years of civil war and the Syrian government killed over 100,000 people and no response from Russia. A week ago the government of Syria crossed that red line and used W.M.D. gas to kill their own people. A coalition was formed to step in and protect the people of Syria by stopping the government of Syria the use of gas and kill people. All of a sudden after just 2 days Russia responds in an emergency to allow the government of Syria to continue the use of W.M.D. and keep on killing more people.

  3. Allow me to explain Russia: If Assad goes down, Syria turns into a disaster zone of fundamentalist Islamists + chaos. They are (responsibly, in their opinion) ‘dissuading’ Obama from taking any hot-headed moves.

  4. Hah. It’ll take a few days for the Russians to get into position. By then it’ll be over. Putin will tell Assad (if the latter is still alive), “sorry” and thus will save face. Assad’s military capability will be crushed, and the Arabs will think twice about using chemical weapons again.
