1. That is what you get with incompetent (and/or corrupt) political leadership. Even the former mayor is trying to sell his business and move out of town.

3. What do you expect? NY sux. Taxing and ticketing and penalizing the living daylights out of us !!!

4. It’s because property taxes are so high. Many cannot afford to spend $15,000 a year on property tax alone, let alone the mortgage. And for those who can afford it, there are better ways to spend your money.

5. Stay away from the movers in the main image, they might come in cheap at time of quote, but they find ways to make up more charges, break almost everything the touch, very unprofessional crew’s, i fell in with them 2x and others I had referred them too have the same experience.

6. My wife and I occasionally visit the NYC metro area and can never understand why people live there.

8. Yes coffee addict, I will present a theory since the study is only about numbers and nothing about the types leaving. More and more baby boomers are retiring, are they staying or moving for example to Florida? Know anyone who has moved to Lakewood or Eretz Yisroel?

9. Don’t forget dumb economic policies. New York has a large amount of natural gas in the ground and the state should be a major gas producer, but the Democrats won’t allow it to be exploited, resulting in much higher prices than adjacent states with pro-gas energy policies. New York was once the center of manufacturing (the famous observation that in 1861 New York State alone had more industry than the entire Confederacy) – now manufacturing has collapsed due to dumb government policies.

10. Many East-Coasters are moving to Los Angeles. The average temperature all year round in over 70 degrees and there is sunshine here almost every day of the year. No snow. No frost. Housing costs are high but there are new communities opening up all over, North of L.A., South of L.A. and West too. Fruits and vegetables are a lot cheaper out here but there are a lot of Nuts and Fruits here. They’re called DemocRATs. There is a huge Jewish presence here with many communities spread out throughout the L.A. area. We have Chasidish, Litvish, Sephardic, Persian, etc. Whatever you’re looking for in Yiddishkeit, we’ve got. Come visit Los Angeles for a week or two and include a Shabbos, anytime of the year. You may not want to go back to Polar Bear country ever again.

11. @Abe, I generally don’t comment, but I have personally used Mazel Tov movers on a number of occasions, and each time they went above and beyond to the extent that I recommended them to a number of friends all with great results. I can only guess that you are someone with a possible conflict of interest. Are you competition? It definitely sounds like it.

12. With 102,000,000 cars crossing the George Washington Bridge each year, paying $16 to do so, the government rakes in more than $1.6 BILLION a year. (Actually, since tractor trailers pay $102 EACH to cross that bridge, and there are always trucks intermingled with cars, they’re surely raking in much, much more.) Do they think we don’t know we’re getting fleeced??

15. NYC and the surrounding areas and suburbs have had healthy population growth. The troubling areas are upstate NY (the Rust Belt, the stagnant economy, the high costs of taxes and awful weather– I’m thinking of Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, Poughkeepsie, and central/southern NJ). Especially if you aren’t Jewish, why not move to a warmer climate, with a stronger job market, mild winters, and pay $2,500 a year on property taxes in the Carolinas.

17. Astronomical Income and Real Estate taxes are obscene, Death taxes are obscene. This whole bureaucracy built around raising billions in fines is obscene. The new bail law aka legally condoned criminality is obscene. The attacks on the religiously observant by both the criminals, the demagogic politicians and the executive organs of government, each in their own way, is obscene,
    Liberals only know how to do one thing well, Hang their legal law abiding citizens upside down, empty their pockets, and spend the money on everyone else.
    This exodus is only going to grow.

18. @BystanderNY, the only interest i have is for others not to get screwed, i am not in the moving or anything close business, just a customer who was screwed 2x by them and people i referred them to were also screwed, i am happy for you that your experience was good.

19. Finally people are realizing there’s a world outside of NY and NJ. A better world.

    And no, LA is not a good option. California is a stupid place to live.

    Move to Nevada, Arizona or Utah.

    Los Angeles has the second largest Jewish Community in the country and the third largest Frum Community in the country. Is that what you’re referring to?
    You can go live in Utah.

    Yeah… no one gives a sun-dried tomato about the Jewish community in the smog-filled, traffic drenched, air-headed garbage heap that’s called LA.
