For the first time, the name Muhammad is one of the ten most popular names for boys in the United States, according to the annual BabyCenter list.
The name Muhammad rose four spots from the 2018 list to make it to the top ten for 2019. A Muslim name for girls, Aaliyah, also made it to the top ten this year. Aaliyah is a derivation of the name “Ali” which means “exalted.”
“Muhammad’s been rising on BabyCenter top baby name lists around the world, so we knew it would soon break into the U.S. top 10,” says Linda Murray, BabyCenter’s global editor in chief. “Muslim families often choose Muhammad for firstborn sons to honor the prophet and bring blessings to the child. The name also has multiple spellings, and that helps a name get into the top 10.”
The name Muhammad first entered the top 100 popular US baby names in 2013.
The most popular name for boys in 2019 was Liam and the most popular name for girls was Sophia.
