Benoit Wesly is a 73-year-old businessman and an outspoken Jewish leader in the Netherlands. Early Sunday morning he awoke to find four assailants surrounding his bed.

They had broken into his home in Maastricht and assaulted, tortured and robbed him. His wife was out of the country.

Police are unsure whether he was chosen as a victim because of his Jewishness. Wesly is a leader of the Jewish community in the Limburg region, in the south of the Netherlands.

The four masked assailants beat Wesly, pushed him down the stairs, stabbed him with a screw driver, and kicked him. Then the men tied him to a chair, placed a piece of cloth over his mouth and nose, and poured water on the cloth – a torture technique known as waterboarding until he gave them his code to his safe.

Wesly was tied to the chair for many hours before he finally managed to wriggle free. He went straight to the police.

Police are investigating.
