Shrinking The Gap On The Subways

nyc subway.jpgThe Long Island Rail Road is planning new steps to shrink gaps between platforms and trains, which have been under scrutiny since a teenager fell through a gap and died in 2006.

LIRR officials are proposing to install metal plates extending two inches beneath the doors on the commuter railroad’s cars.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s board is set to vote next week on spending more than $9 million to install the plates on most LIRR cars. Similar extensions would be added separately to the rest of the LIRR fleet.
