Gas Approaching $4.00 Per Gallon In NYC

gp1.jpgGasoline prices nationwide surpassed the $3.50 per gallon mark for the first time ever, and oil is at a record high. In New York, the numbers are even worse, with the average price for regular $3.64 and on Long Island at $3.67 a gallon.

Gas prices typically rise in the Spring as stations switch over to pricier summer-grade fuel and demand picks up as more travelers take to the road. But this years prices are rising even faster than normal, according to experts, who blame a massive jump in benchmark crude prices which spiked to a new record on Monday.

According to the Consumer Federation of America, 60 percent of Americans said gas prices are causing them hard to severe economic problems, but still long commutes, inadequate mass transit, and lack of fuel efficient vehicles all contribute to our inability to change our behavior.

  2. I think I’ll walk to work from now on!!!! Lets see… if it takes abt 45 min to get there by car…. uh- maybe I should leave at 2 a.m. and I’ll get there on time!!! Nah, I think I better start now and I’ll be there a bit early!!!
For goodness sake we gotta fight ciyhall here to step in and do something!!!!!!!

  3. Stop whining spoilt Americans, in the UK petrol ( gas ) is close to 7 dollars a gallon and its been like that since sheshes yemei bereishis. Stop buying massive vehicles and stop relying on your cars all the time. Use public transportation more frequent and maybe it won’t make such a difference.

  4. Just drove back to Brooklyn from Far Rockaway, where gas along Beach Channel Drive has definitely his the $4 mark already! Premium gas & full-serve are well over $4.

  5. Excuse me Englander… but my I assume you make more too in the UK??? dotn assume we all buy big cars… I shuttle in my Yeshivishe Nes to work and gas in the US like this makes it hard to cover the bills! Public transportation isnt available direct (only an extra 45 minutes out of the way…) so dont be so quick to squelch the kvetching.
Some of us are really not making it this way… like paying these outragious gas bills primarily to get to work and and not making enough to cover it!!!! And the employers cant afford to pay our gas bills for us!

  6. The Europeans are always telling US people not to complain about gas prices because theirs are higher. Theirs are higher though because the gov’t there purposely set very high taxes gasoline (er, petrol) to discourage you from using a car. The US doesn’t believe in this disincentive though.

We have different structure for pricing all of our goods and services here and there so please, don’t compare without normalizing the data. In the US, prices have gone up by a relatively higher amount than in Europe because of the falling value of the dollar.

So, Englander, why don’t you stop YOUR whining. WE are entitled to say gas prices are high even if yours are higher. If you don’t like it, give up your social benefits and come live over here.
