Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein Pilots Flatbush Pesach Dumpster Program

nyc garbage truck1.jpgIn a first for the Flatbush community, the Department of Sanitation, at the request of Brooklyn Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein (41st A.D.), has arranged for the pilot placement of “Chametz dumpsters” at areas central to the neighborhoods of East Midwood, Madison, Nottingham, Sheepshead Bay, and Fraser – also known as the “East 30’s.” This is in addition to the special Pesach pickups arranged for by the Assemblywoman every year for her district.

The proposal for the program arose at the annual meeting held at the Assemblywoman’s district office in Sheepshead Bay with religious leaders and community representatives to discuss Passover pickup and other sanitation related matters. With Erev Pesach falling out on Shabbos this year extra concern was voiced with regard to ridding houses and curbsides of Chametz before candle lighting.

“These dumpsters will give individuals who find Chametz close to the start of Shabbos the ability to deposit it at a location near their home and personally ensure it is all disposed before the start of Shabbos,” said Assemblywoman Weinstein. Similar programs have been utilized by Jewish communities in the neighborhood of Borough Park and in the borough of Queens.

The dumpsters will be available for deposits from Noon on Friday, April 18th, and will be removed at approximately 7:30pm after the start of Shabbos. The locations are as follows:

*James Madison HS Sports Fields – Southside of Quentin Road (between East 26th and East 27th)
*Eckerds Pharmacy – 2577 Nostrand Avenue (between L & M)
*City Park Adjacent to Derech Hatorah – 2810 Nostrand Avenue (between Kings Hwy. & P)

For more information you can call Assemblywoman Weinstein’s office at (718) 648-4700, Monday-Thursday 9:30-5:00 and Friday 9:30-4:30.

(NOTE: A Comprehensive list regarding garbage pick-ups and Chometz burning locations will follow later this week. If you have any information regarding Erev Pesach (only!) that you would like to share, please email it to [email protected])

  1. It takes a woman 😉
We have dumpsters in our out of town community. Please, spread the word to the olam that they must take care when they throw their bags in, and to please avoid making a chillul Hashem by cleaning up those bags that miss.
