The New Jersey Department of Health is warning residents that a twelfth case of measles – a highly contagious disease – has been confirmed in Ocean County. This individual could have exposed others to the infection while in Ocean County between November 6 and November 9.
The Ocean County Health Department tells YWN that there are also an additional ELEVEN potential cases under investigation.
The Ocean County Health Department continues to support and highly encourage the exclusion of non-vaccinated children from schools, preschools and daycares in the outbreak area. These entities have the authority to make that decision when an outbreak has been declared by the New Jersey Department of Health.

November 6 between 1:15 and 6:45 p.m. - Motor Vehicle Commission, 1861 Hooper Ave, Toms River, NJ 08753 (The Motor Vehicle Commission has chosen to close this location until Monday, Nov. 19. Other locations will be open for customers in the area).
November 7 between 2:30 and 5:15 p.m.
The Department is working in collaboration with the Ocean County Health Department to identify and notify people who might have been exposed during the time the individuals were infectious.

On Wednesday YWN published that the number of cases is likely higher. In just one case, YWN has been informed of 6 people in one family of anti-vaxxers that all have signs and symptoms of measles. The mother refuses to take her children to a doctor due to fears of the “doctor injecting poison into her children”.
Despite threats of lawsuits by the anti-vaxxer cult, the The Ocean County Health Department continues to support and highly encourage the exclusion of non-vaccinated children from schools, preschools and daycares in the outbreak area. These entities have the authority to make that decision when an outbreak has been declared by the New Jersey Department of Health.
As YWN reported on Tuesday, the outbreak is mostly affecting the Frum population, fueled by anti-vaccine propaganda spread by a small minority of the community. Not only is the anti-vaxxer cult responsible for this outbreak, but they are responsible for anti-Semitic propaganda that has begun spreading online – specifically targeting Jews because of failing to get vaccinated.
Brooklyn has at least 24 confirmed cases, mostly in Boro Park and Williamsburg.
There are unconfirmed reports of cases in Passaic, NJ. YWN has been unable to confirm them at the time of publishing.
New York officials have confirmed 68 cases of measles in just Rockland County, making it the largest outbreak in the state in decades.
The Journal News reports Rockland County’s outbreak originated from three groups of travelers from Israel, and it has affected residents in New Square, Monsey and Spring Valley. Rockland health officials say the affected patients are a mix of adults, teens and children. County officials are monitoring schools to ensure non-immunized children are not attending.

I seriously think the county should organize a 4-day mandatory break from school & work, shopping & all. Just Friday through Monday as a midwinter stave off measles vacation. This way there won’t be any symptomless people infecting others (whether they are vaccinated or not, immunocompromised or otherwise.) Would be great 4 everyone.

I am not voicing an opinion for against vaccinations (although this article clearly IS voicing an opinion.)
I just wonder why this is specifically limited to frum Jews? I am guessing that there ought to be approximately the same percentage of population among non-Jews that also do not vaccinate.

Perhaps the outbreak is so far limited to Frum Jews only because the transmission can only travel in places that the carriers travel, and frum Jews tend to stay in the frum community more than not. The Motor Vehicle office is probably NOT solely occupied by Jews. Let’s see if any non-Jews contract Measles from there?
Again – I just want to understand the Logistics of why this is just in the Frum communities, and also why are people (including this article) implying that Anti-Vax beliefs are only among Jewish families.
Bunny76 – a long time ago, when plagues (R”L) hit a town, there probably would have been a ban on congregating, traveling, and socializing to reduce the spread of disease. (Sometimes even self-imposed, due to fear.)

Why are these people still walking freely around town? we know every where they were, day and time, why can’t we lock them up until they get better? They are lots of deaths from vaccines every year. Why doesn’t that scare anyone? Just the one death from measles scares people. The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VEARS) shows over 150 deaths a year after vaccines.

We know that vaccines kill and damage some people and it is horrible. The alternative of not vaccinating is worse. No one said it’s risk free. The medical community has agreed that the benefits outweigh the risks. The Rabbonim have gone public agreeing that this is Daas Torah. Saying ‘I won’t do it because everyone else will’ is against the Halacha. The reason why there are ‘vaccine courts’ is much like the ‘Good Samaritan’ law’ which protects people who try and help from being sued if they inadvertently hurt someone. The drug companies know that they will hurt people in the process, but are mandated to vaccinate them, so they need government protection. I know this all will be discounted as conspiracy, but I write to those people who are looking at those objectively and sanely. It’s really not that complicated. We know there are risks yet the Halacha as publicized by the Rabbonim is that we take the risk. In God We Trust.

613shmuel, There are people that die every year from seat belts. They get stuck in a burning car and can’t get out in time. Or the child in the back of a car with a safety lock.
Nonetheless, every sensible person understands that more people are saved than die from seatbelts and safety locks. Which is why we use them.
Vaccines are the same. In the aggregate, it saves many, many more lives.

Generally, I’ve witnessed with many anti-vaxxers making many claims and opinions on the matter without any medical or science experience, nor with any strong Rabbinate experience. I respect others opinions and ways of life, but I won’t accept anti-vaxxers presenting what they think are facts, but without the ability to properly source or reference their claims. I express my desire to see their references/sources, but the conversation goes dead after that point. If I were to have written an essay back in my college days without proper sources then 1. It’s plagiarism. 2. There is no proof or link to a scholarly opinion on the topic.
If Rambam were alive today, he’d be disappointed with the entire situation. Rambam was actually someone who was an expert in science and medicine, and biblical and Talmudic learnings. He didn’t just compile opinions all day long. You’d see plenty of anti-vaxxers arguing with him and insulting him, as we are seeing against various other Rabbonim and doctors today. Those individuals who insult, fight, argue, and fail to properly source/reference their opinions, I can’t respect nor take their opinions in account.

I agree that expressing opinion without proper research does not hold much water, however I have a personal example and have spoken to many parents of a special needs child that saw how the MMR adversely affected their otherwise healthy normal child to the extent that their child became non-verbal and autistic. Again, I ask how can basic qualitative research be ignored. Is it because it is not written in APA format?? Maybe that the reason to discount visual, actual testimonies of non-biased parents. The parents have nothing to gain in expressing their opinions yet the pharmaceuticals and doctors have only to gain. So again I ask should their opinions not be posted and not even taken into consideration due to them not having a college education or because their written paper is not formatted correctly?? Please explain.

There is tons of proof and studies to back up problems with vaccines. We dont just Google and read some blogger and make a decision based on that. Any parent cautious of vaccines has done hours upon hours of research
