Cleveland police are investigating the death of a Beachwood woman in downtown Cleveland Sunday night.
Officers said they received a 911 call at about 5:30 p.m. of a woman screaming in the area of 75 Erieview plaza, near East 12th Street, behind The Galleria at Erieview Mall.
When they arrived at the scene they found a 53-year-old woman with severe bleeding and suffering from, “multiple defects to her torso,” according to Cleveland Police Sergeant Sammy Morris. She was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center where she later died.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Aliza C. Sherman A”H. She was a nurse at the Cleveland Clinic.
The Clinic released the following statement:
“We are saddened by the tragic death of our long-time employee, Aliza, who was an invitro fertilization nurse. She has touched many lives and will always be remembered for her warmth and kindness. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.”
Police overnight told NewsChannel5 that Sherman had been shot.
Sherman was in possession of her purse when she was taken to Metro and it is unknown if any items were missing. Her car was also found nearby and towed from the area.
Police said they are investigating this case as a homicide and are in the process of checking several surveillance cameras in the area.
Sgt. Morris went on to say, “Downtown is usually quiet and we rarely have problems down here.”
