NYC: Child Is First Flu-Related Death Of The Season

Health department officials in New York say a child has died from influenza, the city’s first reported flu-related pediatric death of the season.

Acting New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot made the announcement on Thursday.

The child’s name, age, gender and borough of residence haven’t been released. Officials would only say that the child was under 18.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were about 80,000 deaths and 900,000 hospitalizations from the flu in the U.S. last year. Of the 183 children who died from flu-related diseases, five lived in New York City.

City health department officials recommend flu shots for anyone 6 months and older.

  1. Time to get the shot. Would you want to be the one responsible for a child ch”v leaving us? How about ch”v your grandmother? Or your cousin on chemo? Or your own newborn grandchild? We are responsible each for the other, and getting a flu shot is one of ways we keep that obligation.

  2. Could be the flu shot itself that killed that child, but that never gets reported. What’s certain is that the child DID indeed receive the flu shot… Otherwise that information would have been released in bold, as part of the title.

  3. There was a news report that 3000 people in Monsey were signing up for vaccinations. I wish someone could confirm this. It certainly would be good news.

  4. Logical, you are incorrect. The information was reported on another news site. “A child in New York who had not received the flu vaccine died from the virus, state officials announced on Wednesday, the first influenza-related pediatric death reported in New York this flu season”.
