VIDEO: NYC Firefighter Survives 30 Foot Fall At Bronx Blaze; Seriously Hurt

A firefighter has been seriously injured in a 30-foot fall while battling a blaze in the Bronx.

Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro says the Sunday night fire occurred in a Pelham Bay building where marijuana was being grown. The firefighter was admitted to a hospital in serious but stable condition with back and leg injuries.

FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the firefighter is 38 years old, a married father of three and a 12-year veteran of the department.

“Very early in the operation, the firefighter assigned to roof position was climbing to the roof on a 35-foot extension ladder, lost his footing and fell 30 feet to the pavement,” Nigro said. “That firefighter received serious injuries. He is stable and he is conscious. … He is a very lucky individual.

“It’s a very dangerous job,” Nigro added. “I’ve said this over and over at these operations and sometimes these things happen.”

The cause of Sunday night’s fire was not immediately determined.

In September 2016, Deputy Chief Michael Fahy was killed in a gas explosion at another marijuana “grow house” in the Bronx. Two men who caused Fahy’s death by tampering with gas lines at that illegal marijuana-growing operation pleaded guilty to manslaughter and were sentenced to prison in August.
