Last year, Congress took a significant step forward in improving security for our community institutions – shuls, yeshivas, religious facilities, charitable and social service centers – when it more than doubled funding for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program. In FY 2018, Congress appropriated $60 million for the program, which provides various types of equipment to better secure nonprofits at high risk of terrorist attack. Facing an increasing threat, the Jewish community has rightfully been a major beneficiary of this assistance.
On Wednesday, July 25, the House Appropriations Committee reported out the FY 2019 NSGP allocation, maintaining the level at $60 million. But, unfortunately, the corresponding proposal on the Senate side puts the appropriation at only $35 million – a significant cut that will have serious ramifications! As these bills move through Congress, we must convey the important message that both House and Senate maintain the current level of $60 for this program that is so critical to the security of our families and institutions.
We know that our grassroots advocacy can make a difference.
Agudath Israel and other organizations, under the leadership of the Jewish Federations of North America, fought hard to create and maintain the NSGP program. National and local involvement, working together, brought the program to where it is today. Please reach out to your Senators and Representatives and urge them to stand firm on maintaining the $60 million FY 2019 NSGP allocation.
