Police in Albany, New York say an officer has shot and killed a man who was stabbing his mother.

Officers investigating reports of a person with a weapon late Friday heard a woman screaming.

Police say the officers saw a woman lying in an apartment stairwell with stab wounds to her neck and face

They say 20-year-old Schuyler Lake then walked down the stairs and started stabbing the woman again. Police say he refused orders to drop his knife.

Police say Officer Elston Mackey fired several rounds at Lake, killing him.

Police have identified the woman as Lake’s 52-year-old mother. She is in critical condition at a hospital.

Officers searched the apartment and found Lake’s 55-year-old uncle with stab wounds to the abdomen. He is also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
