FAKE NEWS: Crying Immigrant Girl in Viral Photo Was NOT Separated From Mother

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says Democrats and the news media exploited for political purposes a widely circulated photograph of a 2-year-old Honduran girl crying as her mother is searched near the U.S.-Mexico border.

It was widely assumed the toddler and her mother had been separated under President Donald Trump’s now-rescinded policy that resulted in separating families entering the U.S. illegally.

But multiple outlets interviewed the father of Yanela Sanchez, the girl behind the iconic image, and he said he had learned that his two-year-old daughter was detained with her mother at a facility in Texas, and the two were not separated at all. The Honduran government confirmed his version of events to Reuters.

The photo was used to bash Trump on the front cover of this week’s edition of TIME magazine. “Welcome to America,” declared a somber TIME cover, which showed the picture of Yanela Sanchez next to a towering Trump.

TIME, which is standing by the cover despite the new information, originally called it “an image America could not ignore” and interviewed the photographer, as did other outlets. TIME followed up with another article entirely about the cover and “the story behind” it.

The picture was featured in international coverage of the policy around the world. The New York Daily News also put Sanchez on the cover of its June 16 issue with the headline: “Callous. Soulless. Craven. Trump.”

CNN analyst Chris Cillizza wrote an entire article on the TIME cover: “It shows the compassion gap that exists between the Trump administration’s ‘zero-tolerance’ border policy and the real-life people that are affected.”

Sanders tweeted Friday: “It’s shameful that dems and the media exploited this photo of a little girl to push their agenda. She was not separated from her mom. The separation here is from the facts.”

She called on Democrats to help Trump fix the immigration system — after Trump said Republicans should wait until after November’s congressional elections.

  1. Over 2000 children have been seperated from their parent due to Trump’s callousness. Melania (who wore high heels to visit the Houston devestation, and was twice caught plagarizing) shows her utter disregard for the suffering of others when she goes to visit a detention center wearing a jacket emblazened with “I dont really care, do you? Religous leaders accross the political spectrum condemn Trump’ s heartless policy. Agudah, OU and RCA all issue statements that Trump’s policy is immoral and opposite of what Torah teaches us. Trump lies by blaming Dem’s and saying he can’t do anything without Dem’s support but then he caves to pressure and issues an executive order. This is not Fake News. This is very real news even though this particular child was not seperated from her parents.

  2. where kids separated from parents? yes. So perhaps that photo was fake, who cares, its like any stock photo. The point is, the main story is true, its pointless for trump supporters to distract from this by managing to find one photo where the facts were different but was used by mistake

  3. Soon huckleberry Sanders will be telling us that no children were ever separated. These vile evil liars disgrace the office of the presidency.
