UPDATED 2:45PM EST: Bomb Scare At Hebrew Academy of Miami Beach

rasg.jpg2:00PM EST: [UPDATES BELOW] YWN had learned that the Hebrew Academy of Miami Beach (RASG) has just been evacuated due to a suspicious package. The school is located at 2400 Pine Tree Drive in Miami Beach, and has close to 800 students. Additionally, the surrounding streets (Washington Avenue) have been shut down as well. A massive police response – including the bomb squad are currently on the scene – and proceeding to investigate the package which is on the steps of the building.

UPDATE 2:45PM EST: The school has issued the following email a few moments ago:

Dear Parents – I am happy to report that the suspicious item that was found in front of the school was a large battery used in homes for alarm systems.  There were no wires or any other indicators that there was danger for students or staff at any point.   The bomb squad neutralized the battery in a controlled explosion and gave us the all-clear.  Law enforcement responded very quickly and were keeping us informed every step of the way.  In consultation with the Miami Beach Police Department and the Bomb Squad, students were kept indoors and were kept out of harm’s way during the entire process.

I would like to commend our security team, particularly our Chief of Security, Kfir Lebovich, for being alert and for handling the situation according to appropriate protocol.
