Merkel: G-7 Summit With Trump Was A ‘SOBERING AND DEPRESSING’ Experience

German Chancellor Angela Merkel found the contentious Group of Seven summit with U.S. President Donald Trump a “sobering” and “depressing” experience but said European leaders won’t be “taken advantage of” on trade.

She conceded in an interview on German public television Sunday that the meeting’s outcome “wasn’t a great thing.”

“I have spoken of a sobering experience, which for me is a lot,” she added.

Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and the other leaders clashed with Trump over steel and aluminum tariffs as well as his decision to abandon a deal with Iran to limit its nuclear program.

The group managed a common statement in which they agreed to disagree on some issues, only to have Trump disavow the document in a tweet after leaving the meeting.

Merkel said that “taking it back by tweet was of course sobering and also a little depressing.”

She said the European Union would “act” against the U.S. trade measures, which European leaders regard as going against the rules of the World Trade Organization.

  1. Basically Trump disagreed to agree to disagree, while the other idiots told TRUMP that they disagree to disagree to agree to disagree… What?

  2. Once again, Mr. Trump has managed to alienate our allies, while trying to oblige our long-time enemy by trying to get Russia back into the group.

He backs out of the agreement by tweet – insulting all the people he met with – and now he’s going to expect the same people to back him in his negotiations with Kim. Not too reality-oriented. This isn’t 1975 and the Soviet Union isn’t waiting to swallow up anyone the US abandons. The world has changed, but Mr. Trump’s ideas about it haven’t.

And of course when the US tries to counter the BDS people, can we count on all the people Mr. Trump has alienated to back him? Not very likely.

  3. All never trumpers must face the facts: Trump is a tough negotiator, and the world needs the U.S. as much as we need them. Obama’s weak and dangerously stupid foreign policy made us look like fools on the world stage. If you don’t like his character that’s ok, but don’t deny that his policys are worse than obambas!

  4. My dear Putin,
A tough negotiator is very good for business,
BUT when you’re in the world of politics one needs to take other things in account, business & politics ain’t working together,
As you rightfully say THE WORLD NEEDS THE USA AS MUCH AS WE NEED THEM, goes to show that you need to do things with יישוב הדעת,
