Port Chester (NY) Police said a smoker lighting up in his car touched off a gas explosion that blew off the back of his car and shattered windows in an apartment building.
The 35-year-old driver apparently didn’t realize that acetylene gas was leaking into his car from a tank in the trunk. The gas is used in welding.
The blast in a Port Chester parking lot Friday evening hurled metal and glass into four nearby cars and broke windows in a nearby building. Witness Lois Vareltzis said her apartment building shook.
Port Chester Police Lt. James Ladeairous said police found the driver on the ground with a leg injury, unsure whether he had been thrown from the car or gotten out on his own.
No other injuries were reported.

It wouldn’t have happened if it was a Marlboro.
he didn’t wonder what that peculiar smell was?
This sounds like an attempted suicide. from time to time the news carries stories of buildings that are leveled by Acetylene explosions.
