Greenfield Thanks Bloomberg for Listening to his Call for Gas Rationing to Ease Crisis

Councilman David G. Greenfield is thanking Mayor Michael Bloomberg for finally instituting a gas rationing plan to help alleviate the ongoing gas crisis, something he called for nearly a week ago. Yesterday, Greenfield publicly took the Mayor and Governor to task for not doing enough to solve the gas crisis. Today, Mayor Bloomberg announced that gas rationing will go into effect at 6am tomorrow, Friday, November 9, 2012.

“I am glad that the mayor has recognized the severity of this gas crisis, especially in areas like Brooklyn, where it has become the biggest issue for many residents. This situation has quickly gotten out of control over the past week, making it imperative that government take immediate action to reduce lines at local gas stations. While this decision to institute gas rationing in New York City should have come days ago, it is a relief that the mayor is finally taking much needed action on this issue,” said Councilman David G. Greenfield.

As of tomorrow morning, if you have a license plate with an odd number you can fill gas on an odd day and vice versa. So for example, tomorrow is November 9th. Nine is an odd number, so you can only fill up tomorrow if the last number on your plate is odd, Greenfield explained.

  1. Why cant more fuel be delivered? Is it the absence of trucks? If so let the city lease trucks? why cant we ascertain what is the source of the problem and resolve it at that point? Thanking the Mayer for acting after more than a week is unacceptable. where was he when Christy did it almost a week ago? where is the Governer?

  2. Odd even restrictions would work very well, if only we had gas stations that are open!.Here in Midwood, Bklyn, there are no open stations. Drive down Coney Island Avenue, btw Ave N and Ave P, there are three stations, totaly closed, with one, today, with a tanker in the station, did not open, announcing on a loud speaker, “that there will be no pumping, due to electrical problems” No one else in the area had such problems. Send Gov. Christi to Bklyn!

  3. It is well know, especially in the disaster recovery community (to which I belong) that many politicians self promote after a disaster and take credit that does not belong to them for resolving various parts of the crisis.

Many NY politicians have been trying to get gas for NY. But Yeshiva World is implying that David Greenfield’s actions (which are part of his job) made the difference. The National Guard told me last night when I was looking for gas cans for Far Rockaway that they themselves had trouble getting gas. David Greenfield did not rectify our gas crisis and implying that he did under these circumstances paints him as an opportunist and takes away from his credibility and that of Yeshiva World.

Definition of Yellow Journalism: “Yellow journalism, in short, is biased opinion masquerading as objective fact.”

This is a Frum publication written by Frum people for Frum people. This kind of reporting is not Emmes and is not ethical. Please stop it and let Greenfield make his reputation honestly by doing good, which I am sure he does.

  4. This restriction is not really ‘rationing’, which is defined as “To allow each person to have only a fixed amount of (a particular commodity)”. This rule only restricts WHEN you can get it, not how much. If you just divide up the line into odds and evens, the long lines will still average to the exact same total between every two days.

So thanks Bloomberg and Greenfield, there will still be the exact same length lines, for the exact same insufficient amount of gas.

I heard the governor last Friday saying that there was no problem any longer as everything was back to full capacity. I heard the mayor on Sunday saying that the pipelines had just been reopened (to me that also meant that the governor had lied), and the problems would go away in a day or two. Today I read that the pipeline won’t be reopened for two to three weeks?!?? It is comical how politicians can be so clueless.

Then there are the morons that say that the long lines are just ‘hysteria’ or people that are ‘hoarding’ gas. Right. They are waiting 12 hours on lines and then putting 200 gallons into their 15 gallon tanks to ‘hoard it’ because they are ‘hysterical’. It is so good to know that there really is no problem.

    1) When was the last time Mayor Bloomberg took his car to a gas station to fill it up himself?

    2) Are they driving around the city totally blind? It is blatantly obvious that at any given time, 75% of the gas stations are closed. The remaining 25% therefore have impossibly long lines that stretch for blocks and tie up traffic and parking spots.

    3) The stations that are getting gas slowly and have the lines, are only open based on the schedule of the policemen that are controlling the otherwise hazardous crowds. I acknowledge that they are necessary. But their schedule is rotating between stations, so that one station may be open at night, and another in the morning. So even if you need gas badly, and are resigned to waiting on a long line, how are you supposed to figure out which station you should be going to? I have seen many long lines waiting at stations that are closed. Can I find a schedule of when each station will be open?

  5. Hannah18, it’s very popular in politics to beat up on elected officials, event the good ones. You are wrong and owe Greenfield an apology.

Greenfield WAS the first politician to call for rationing and DID get this done. Here’s a a quote from a non-Jewish prominent website that confirms this:

‘Councilman David Greenfield, who was the only pol to call for the gas rationing as far as we could tell, blasted out a statement thanking Mayor Michael Bloomberg for the new restrictions. “While this decision to institute gas rationing in New York City should have come days ago, it is a relief that the mayor is finally taking much needed action on this issue,” he said.’

The exact link is here: http://bit.ly/SxPsCo

So, please have some respect for a hard-working public servant. Thanks.

  6. Yes – Why can’t we be told the real problem in getting gas .
By the way – it seems Mobil & Gulf never have gas.

    Sunoco is pretty constant .

  7. Hannah18: Im surprised that you are writing this comment for this article and not under the article about Goldfeder going after Bloomberg since he is representing our community. Honestly, all this article is saying is greenfield spoke and govt listened. It doesn’t say he solved the gas problem as you are implying. I think that someone as caring and devoted as greenfield deserves our hakaras hatov in these difficult times for our community which was hit so bad by sandy.

  8. To Hanna18:

Your attack on David Greenfield is uncalled for and totally inaccurate! You owe him a public apology. David happens to serve his constituents, me included, very very well. He is a extremely dedicated public servant. Whenever you call his office with any issue, they always return our call & seriously try to help. Why don’t you & your rich friends from the Rockaway’s, worry about your own left wing pro Gay Marriage politicians you keep electing in to power?! I see they’re really helping you now, huh?

  9. #6 – “…as far as we could tell” doesn’t say much because they can’t tell. So to use it as an accurate source is, well, very inaccurate.
In addition, in my comment “…let Greenfield make his reputation honestly by doing good, which I am sure he does.” certainly doesn’t attack Greenfield. If anything, I’ve complimented him and given him the benefit of the doubt.

The language in the article “Yesterday, Greenfield publicly took the Mayor and Governor to task for not doing enough to solve the gas crisis. Today, Mayor Bloomberg announced that gas rationing will go into effect at 6am tomorrow, Friday, November 9, 2012.” is spin. And if you think it isn’t, then you don’t know much about writing. I think it’s wrong, which is why I wrote “…this paints him as an opportunist and takes away from his credibility and that of Yeshiva World. I didn’t say he was an opportunist, in fact, maybe he had nothing to do with the way this was spun. I’d like to think so. But it’s spin nevertheless. And it’s not honest reporting, whether you like Greenfield or not.

People died in this disaster and some lost everything and tragically, many won’t be able to get it back. So if we were talking about rides on Chol L’moed or some other issue that isn’t about life and death, I wouldn’t care. But under these circumstances this crosses a line.

#9 – I don’t live in the Rockaways, I’m not rich, and neither are my friends, with an exception or two and they don’t live in the Rockaways, give a tremendous amount of Tzedukkah,do much Chessed for individuals and the Klal, support Torah and are not pro gay marriage. I think you may owe me a public apology.
