OU States That Nothing Was Fishy With The Kashrus At The Fish Company

ou22.jpgProducts of Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation (FFMC), located in Winnipeg, Alberta, Canada have been certified by the Orthodox Union for many years. This facility, which only processes kosher fish, has been carefully reviewed and accepted by many respected kosher certifying agencies worldwide.

Recent irresponsible and false claims have been published (Winnipeg Free Press & quoted HERE on YWN) concerning the integrity of the hashgacha as it was administered more than seven years ago, under a previous mashgiach A”H (who is no longer living), alleging that non-kosher fish was sold as kosher. It should be noted that the writer of the piece was identified by the newspaper as “a former fish marketer who believes the FFMC’s monopoly should be broken.”

OU Kosher urges everyone to realize that charges leveled in print can be, and often are, false. The Orthodox Union urges the kosher-consuming public to recognize such spurious innuendo for its true nature.

  1. As I suspected from the beginning. Some of us are so quick to jump up and down ba’shmutzing ehliche people for no reason. You know who you are and zulst dich git shamen!

  2. The main question has not been addressed in the OU’s response. The problem was the Mashgiach, was he present during each run or not. The fact that the plant processed only kosher species is irrelevant. If companies such as Manischewitz were being charged a premium of two cents a pound, it presumably was to pay for a “Mashgiach Temidi” We consumers have aright to know if the Mashgiach was or was not consisently absent. I wonder why the OU carefully avoided answering was or was he not there?

  3. To Alter Yid.
It is quite possible that the OU had an arrangement of visits and other stuff, like checking records that this misinformed irate former fisherman had no clue about. Perhaps he thought the mashgiach was away, but he was really right behind the corner. Most goyim probably have no clue about yotzei vnichnos, mirsas, uman lo marei chazkaso, umdena, and other issues that the OU poskim employ to certify a plant. Thats why I rely on the OU to certify things, not irate former fishermen.
