Police say a man angry about a parking dispute stabbed two people and then drove into a group of people on a New York City sidewalk, leaving one person dead and several others injured, one critically.
Authorities say it happened around 4:30 a.m. Sunday outside a hookah lounge in Queens.
They say it started with the driver of a sedan getting out of his car and stabbing two people in the chest.
Police say the driver then got back into his car, drove off, jumped a curb and hit a group of pedestrians. One person was killed, and five others injured, one of them critically.
The other people hit and the two people stabbed were in stable condition.
Authorities say the driver is in custody. Charges have not yet been filed.
NYPD Statement:
At approximately 4:30AM 2 people were stabbed and a total of 6 people were struck by a vehicle in the vicinity of Liberty Avenue and 128th street in Richmond Hill of Queens.
A preliminary investigation indicates that this incident was precipitated by a parking dispute in front of XS Hookah Lounge, located at 127-10 Liberty Avenue. The driver of a white Hyundai sedan exited the vehicle and stabbed two individuals, both stabbed in the torso.
During the ensuing dispute, involving a group of people who were outside the lounge, the white Hyundai sedan then drove from the scene and mounted the sidewalk approximately half a block away at 128th street. Six individuals were struck by the vehicle, resulting in one fatality. All of the other victims are hospitalized, with one individual listed in critical condition at this time.
At this point one individual, believed to be the occupant of the white Hyundai sedan is in custody. The vehicle has been recovered in another area of Queens.
Detectives are conducting crime scene examination, interviewing victims and witnesses, and searching for video evidence. Further information will be provided as it becomes available. At this time it appears that this incident originated from a parking dispute which escalated resulting in the death and several serious injuries.
