NBC New York reports a 55-year-old man allegedly ran over a 65-year-old man after a fender bender in Brooklyn Thursday night, dragging the victim for roughly two blocks before leaving him to die in the road in front of his wife.
The New York Daily News reports the initial confrontation occurred in the parking lot of Costco on Second Ave. near 37th St. in Sunset Park, where the victim had been shopping.
Police say the suspect’s van and the other vehicle, which the victim’s wife was driving, were involved in a minor fender bender. The suspect then fled the scene.
The victim hopped in his car and gave chase, catching up with the suspect’s electrical workers van at the intersection of 65th Street and Third Avenue, shortly after 9 PM.
The 65-year-old man, identified as Gavriel Mardaknayevy, of Brooklyn, got out of his wife’s car and tried to confront the 55-year-old driver of the other vehicle. He had walked in front of the suspect’s van when the suspect allegedly accelerated, striking Mardaknayevy and dragging him for at least 2 blocks, authorities say.
The suspect stopped his car and was taken into custody, police say. Charges against him are pending.
Firefighters and others lifted the van and pulled Mardaknayevy out from under the vehicle. Mardaknayevy was pronounced dead at NYU Langone Hospital.
ABC NY spoke with a good samaritan, Michael Othman, who witnessed the entire incident and used his vehicle to block the fleeing van’s path.
“She just seen her husband right in front of her,” Othman said. “The guy just hit him and dragged him in front of the wife. She was going crazy. I held her up on the side, got her water. It was sad. Very sad.”
Othman said “within the two blocks, I tried to stop him two times. The last one I stopped him right here, took him out of the car, grabbed him, put him up against the wall. I told him, ‘Don’t move. Are you crazy? You have a dead body under the (van).’ He didn’t know what he was doing.”

very dangrious on the streets
I hope they put away this man for life. BD”H, HY”D.
Both road rage & mass shootings may currently be the 2 most serious diseases plaguing the USA. Both deserve swift death penalty.
Wow! That truly is horrific. BD’E
There are lots of animals we share the world with. But this shows that we should never try to confront such people on our own. Though I can’t say I wouldn’t have done the sane. I once had a similar incident where I chased after the driver but I was on with the police dept at the same time trying to give them his location.
Nypd doesn’t respond to these issues since “crime is going down” so they do t respond.
The murderers an illegal named Diaz, but fellow Latino da Gonzalez let him on bail since he doesn’t want him deported due to Trump. I kid you not, the murderer is at home tonight BECAUSE he is illegal.
@americaisover. His name is Cruz, he is not an illegal alien and he is under arrest for murder. Where do you get your facts ? http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2017/11/10/brooklyn-man-dragged-by-van/
How do u know he is not illegal?
Out on $50,000 bail. THAT should be illegal. Perhaps both he and the judge should be deported. I’m not serious, but neither must be the judge.
They should prohibit and confiscate dangerous assault automobiles. How many more have to die before to satisfy politicians paid by the car lobby? Only policemen and bus drivers should be allowed to weild these deadly machines.
