The New York Police Department says an officer has shot and wounded a man who was wielding a BB gun.

Officials say the unidentified 19-year-old suspect is now in the hospital after Thursday’s late-night shooting in Brooklyn at 33-23 Church Avenue. Police encountered the man after receiving reports of a man with a gun in a local store.

Upon arriving, the officers confronted the suspect inside a store. The officers attempted to take the suspect into custody. The suspect fled northbound on 34th Street where he was observed with a firearm in his hand. One police officer discharged one round, which struck the suspect in the leg. The suspect continued fleeing northbound on East 34th Street, into 189 East 34th Street, where the suspect was apprehended.

Police later determined it was a BB gun.

Officials are investigating the shooting.
