This Thursday evening 14 of the 21 members of the Orange County Legislature will be needed to allow the potential creation of a new Town of Palm Tree to move forward.
The sensitive issue would allow a portion of the Town of Monroe to be annexed into the Hasidic Village of Kiryas Joel to form the new town.
County Legislature Chairman Stephen Brescia said he plans to vote for the new town.
“We have had two lengthy public hearings and a fair amount of discussion at Rules [committee],” Brescia said. “I think a lot of the issues have been addressed and the fact that the Monroe school board has voted unanimously to redraw the school district, and both county executive candidates are supporting it and quite a few people in those communities.”
If the legislature approves the move, residents of Monroe would then vote on formation of the new town.
