New York City experienced across-the-board reductions in index crime for August 2017, compared with August 2016. There were 21 fewer murders, or -60%; 61 fewer shooting incidents, or -42.1%; and 981 fewer index crimes, or -10.3% in August 2017, compared with August 2016. These reductions contributed to the 4,295 fewer overall citywide index crimes, or -6.4% year-to-date, compared with 2016.
There were 121 rapes reported in August 2017, compared with 144 in August 2016. This is a reduction of 23 crimes, or -16%. There were 1,260 robberies reported in August 2017, compared with 1,412 in August 2016. This is a reduction of 152 crimes, or -10.8%. There were 1,735 felonious assaults reported in August 2017, compared with 2,031 in August 2016. This is a reduction of 296 crimes, or -14.6%. There were 1,015 burglaries reported in August 2017, compared with 1,203 in August 2016. This is a reduction of 188 crimes, or -15.6%. There were 3,764 grand larcenies reported in August 2017, compared with 4,040 in August 2016. This is a reduction of 276 crimes, or -6.8%. There were 645 grand larceny autos reported in August 2017, compared with 669 in August 2016. This is a reduction of 24 crimes, or -3.6%.
“To see violence fall to these record lows defies what many thought was possible,” said Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill. “I am extremely proud of the men and women of the NYPD, who continue to work hard in their duties, as the entire Department strives to make New York City even safer. Together with Neighborhood Policing and our deep connections to our communities, I know we can do even more.”
“Precision and neighborhood policing have brought us the safest August in history, with crime plummeting double digits,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “New Yorkers and the NYPD are working together to shatter records, driving crime down to levels unthinkable in the past. But we will never be complacent. The safest big city in America will continue to get even safer thanks to the diligent crime-fighting work of the men and women in blue.”
There were 179 crimes reported in the Transit Bureau in August 2017, compared with 216 in August 2016. This is a decrease of 37 crimes, or -17.1%. There were 476 crimes reported in the Housing Bureau in August 2017, compared with 538 in August 2016. This is a reduction of 62 crimes, or -11.5%.

My math doesn’t seem to be logically possible. Every year for the last 35 years crime rates have been declining by 10 percent minimum yearly. Guess what, there is still room for another 1,000,000,000 percent. This means it’s a numbers game.
