New Poll On Yeshivaworld

poll.jpgThe Jerusalem Post reports today:

According to a survey on Chareidm commissioned by the McCann Erickson advertising group:

Three-quarters of those surveyed read newspapers over the weekend.

28% said they read Hamodia, 21% said they read Yated Ne’eman, and 16% read Mishpacha.

Half of those surveyed felt that Yated represented Daas Torah, while 42% felt that Hamodia did.

Now lets poll Yeshivaworld…….

Will it be, Yated, Hamodia, Mishpacha, or Yeshiva World?

Take a second, and fill out the poll on the right side.

  1. How many readers have the internet? You wouldn’t be suprised and that includes Rabbanim as well. I mean come on I use the internet for my business as well as Torah. I receive e-mails from an on-line chavursah program and even go to aish.com as well for dvrie Torah. So answer to question #2 there are many in the Jewish comm that have the internet that you or I will never know about. Guarenteed there are families even in Lakewood that the schools don’t know about that have the internet.

BTW how many Bais Yaakov students use the internet for their research. Maybe not at homw but there are other places ie: the library.

  2. I’ll tell you why. Because yeshivah world still doesnt come close to stretching out on the recliner with printed newspaper (like yated, which i voted for) If there was the option of choosing 2- i would definitely put yeshivah world in second. Yated definitely comes in first as a quality NEWSPAPER. Yeshivah world, is a quality WEBSITE. thats the difference.

  3. Oooops… can’t see the poll from this page. Have to go back to main page….

We should not be getting Daas Torah from papers, but I think the idea of representing daas Torah, also includes not having articles and or advertisements that are blatantly against daas Torah, or supporting institutions or organizations which trash Daas Torah.

I have written to a few “Magazine/Newspapers” who sent me complimentary copies that I do not with to receive them anymore, simply because they show photos of improperly dressed people at “Simchas” … or accept advertising from companies with very questionable or lack of kashrus.

  4. Daas Torah from a newspaper, is that a question or a joke? Every Rav has a ## to be reached at, and each situation/circumstances is unique and not for the papercutter DAAS of the papers.
Shabbos – Hamodia, downloads from Aish, letters to editor of Yated, Hebrew mishpacha….

  5. #5,

hmmm, I’m agreeing with torahis1 again. I hadn’t thought this would happen. 😉

That said, I’d go with the Yated as most Torahdike newspaper and YW as most torahdik website.

    #9,
If you have $399 to burn on an Amazon Kindle, and if YW would be available from the kindle, then you could have your cake and eat it too – i.e. to relax on the recliner while reading YW. Too bad you couldn’t do it on shabbos though.

  6. Change the poll to include “none of the above”. That’s the true answer, unless you hold the editors as your daas Torah.

    Edited by Site Moderation Panel.

  7. YW online as-it-happens.

    Hamodia for the news.

    Yated for Divrei Torah.

Jewish Press for the beis hakisai.

    Jewish Week to clean up.

  8. Yated and Hamodia are equal as far as da’as torah, but we buy the Yated primarily b/c no one reads BOTH and my wife likes the Yated.

Mishpacha and Jewish Press (and Kol Haolam Kulo if I get around to it) also.

  9. Yated all the way! I like to read my paper in one piece and not by section. But thats just me. Besides I like the way Avi Yishai, Y. Elchonon and D.D. Levitan report the news and of course Rabbi Lipshutz’s editor’s view.

  10. I read the ….. for laughs, ……. for sinas chinom, ……. for the classifieds and letter writers, …… for recipes and editorials, ….. for out of town news, ……. for business advice, & ……. for sports scores. Arutz Sheva for Israel news & views. YW for updates & (shiurim, aveilim, weather, travel). Mishnah Brura & Igeros Moshe for Halacha & our Rav for DT.

  11. Where would I find your previous “Quick Polls” and its results?

Whatever the poll, it’s quite monotonous to see the same Quick Poll for weeks on end. I think it should be changed every week, or at least, every second week.

  12. I believe the Yated comes closest to representing daas Torah, as the mighty buck is not RL’s goal nor the reason he launched the paper.

The reason I chose the Yated over Yeshiva World is, YWN generaly only offeres the news as is (which happens to be a great great accomplishment, while the Yated offers analasys as well.

[I am actually bothered by the title one paper has given themselves as “….Torah Jewry”. While there is nothing wrong with making an honest living, and actually commendable, how can a publication whose priamry goal is money, take such an title for themselves???]

  13. truth be told/#23, How are you more aware than anyone else which one ”is in it for the buck” and which one exclusively ”is Daas Torah”?

  14. From what I understand, both Hamodia and Yated were founded by great Rabbonim (the Gerrer Rebbe for Hamodia and Rav Shach for Yated.)

(Although Yated has since disassociated itself with the Israeli Yated, so I’m uncertain what its relationship with its original Daas Torah currently is.)

  15. #23
everyones primary goal here in the newspaper industry is the buck
its the one that convinces “you” that they are not only seems to have a sweeter pen.
what makes pulling articles from around the world wire and the internet and publishing those that pertain to the frum oilem have to do with dass torah if that same article is read in the daily news or the marriv is one reading daas torah then also
if a frum person opens a different buisness say a resturant where only top standard kosher food is used people make brochos before the meal and after does that mean when you eat there it is also al pi daas torah yes it may be kosher entertainment but dont label that daas torah.

  16. What is the point of this poll, may I ask?!?! I feel like it’s kind of messing around with ppl’s parnasa! Not directly but let the Yated Lovers stick with yated without outside opinions and the hamodia readers be happy with hamodia and the mishpacha mavens continue to marvel and YW be here to give us the news on the spot while we’re waiting for the others.

Opinions can get messy when it comes to other ppl, we’ve had Lashon Hara discussions- shall we check this one up too?!?!

  17. I read…

Hamodia – If I want some good Rebbe pictures. Specifically of some obscure never heard of Rebbes, performing some obscure never heard of ritual; i.e. The Melhomniker Rebbe performing a pidyon peter sus at a tish last wednesday on the fourteenth yartzeit of his great-grandfather the Vaislanke Dayan.

Jewish Press – If I want some good top-secret news, that is for some reason known only to the JP; i.e. Jewish Press Exclusive! Mossad agent infiltrates Iranian nuclear facility and turns nuclear reactor switch to “off” position.

Yated – If I have any very serious matters on hand that require da’as torah. After all… “Half of those surveyed felt that Yated represented Daas Torah”

Yeshiva world – If I need a good laugh!

  18. Jewish Press is good to wrap my fish in, unless I am eating sushi. Mishpacha is good for the photo journalism. Hamodia is good for the Israeli politics. YW is good because it is free.

  19. Looks like its neck-and-neck between Hamodia and Yated, with Hamodia slightly ahead.

Does anyone know the matzif why Yated seperated themselves with the Israeli edition?

Wasn’t it Reb Yaakov ZT’L that said the shaila isn’t can you take the JP into the bathroom, the shaila is can you take it out?

  20. as a teacher I prefer the writing of Hamodia by a mile. The writers are much more professional and is a much easier read. The Yated tends to be much more biased towards the yeshiva velt and especially Lakewood. Most of the world is not from Lakewood, does not follow their shitas and would not mind to know something of the chasidishe velt.

  21. Don’t both Hamodia and Yated pretty much cover both the litvish AND chasidishe velt?

Perhaps each has a slight bias one way, but overall they both cover all sides pretty decently.

I never understood the silly ”partisans” who swore by one paper or the other. They both are fine Torah papers and its all (and only) a matter of personal preferance (and a touch of bias of course.)

  22. Joseph,

Thank you for honoring me with your response. However I prefaced by stating I believe, not that I know.

Please allow me to elaborate. We are all aware of your opinion in regards to religious Zionism (at least what has been termed that way). In that regard it was quite bothersome to me to not see the Hamodia their position, or close to it. Although it seems as if they have a different viewpoint, they wont express it in the name of “shalom” (or more accurately, not turn away certain crowds from their paper, but instead have turned me away.).

As far as I understand the current Gerrer Rebbe has zilch to do with the English Hamodia, and it was not launched by the Lev Simcha, as was the Hebrew addition.

[Josef, Doc, are you or were you employed by the Hamodia?]

    Sam The Daya,

You have a very valid point. It is well taken. However, to continue your analogy: someone decides that “galle retach” is unhealthy. He proceeds to get it written up in the secular papers (newsday, daily news etc., ‘food journals”). He even claims that the Gedolei Hador paskend like him (whose written letters state the opposite). Simultaneously he is using his political clout with FDA to ban galle, and have some big name galle chefs banned from cooking, since they must have “injured” people. The restaurant that places a large sign on their window stating “come get your delicious galle” although some may take offense, rather than quietly discontinue its sale, in my opinion is:
    a. more representative of those who have the minhag of “galle”
    b. less fearful of losing a buck in complex situations.

While the resteraunt who will choose not to associate with galle in the name of shalom (huh?), in order not to offend anyone and keep all its broad minded custermers

  23. truth be told/#39,

I’m not quite clear what you are stating in your last comment. Both Hamodia and Yated are anti-zionist (just as is the Agudah). What isn’t clear?

As far as I know, Hamodia is affiliated with the Gerrer Rebbe and his Daas Torah and always has been. Yated used to be affiliated with Rav Shach, but they disassociated with the Israeli edition (in unclear circumstances), so I’m uncertain which Daas Torah they are currently affiliated with.

No I don’t, nor have I ever, worked there. What does that have to do with a hill of beans? You don’t have to work somewhere to appreciate their work.

  24. IMO, Hamodia is the most professionally written, but Yated is more liberal – they would print certain news that Hamodia wouldn’t. As for the Jewish Press – they simply have NO LIMITS.

  25. …and as we move into the final stretch, Hamodia is in the lead, one length ahead of Yated… YW pulls in closer to Yated… Mishpacha lags behind, as its first amazing spurt of speed has left it with little energy for the finish…

  26. I look at the price tag, the Jewish Herald and 5TJT (5town jewish times) are for free. Mishpacha is a beauty but the cost is an arm and leg, so I read them at the doctor’s office a month or two later. (BTW just read an amazing bio of Rav Nachman Bulman zt”l, wow!! we are lacking today in special people).
