It is now official and world leaders, including the White House and Israel, have released statements of support for the democratically elected president of Egypt following decades of rule under Hosni Mubarak. Despite the politically correct statements, both President Barak Obama and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will be carefully monitoring the newly elected state leader, one with long standing firm ties with the radical Islamic Brotherhood. Morsi’s recent resignation from the radical Islamic organization is insufficient to allay the fears of world leaders as he ran a mixed campaign, simultaneously calling for strengthening Islam while addressing Egypt’s Christian population and assuring all citizens that his is not seeking to become an Islamic leader.

Statements from Cairo following his official appointment on Sunday, 4 Tammuz 5772 signal the president plans to recognize and abide by all international treaties, statement that will have to be backed with actions over time. Israeli defense and intelligence community commanders are growing increasingly concerned over the anarchy in Sinai, which is rapidly becoming a terror base for launching attacks into Israel.

Speaking with Iran’s Fars News Agency on Monday, Morsi also spoke of his intention of strengthening ties with Teheran, another worrisome message for Jerusalem.

Back in Israel, Minister of Strategic Affairs Dan Meridor released a statement to the media that Israel accepts the outcome of the Egyptian elections. Shortly after the official results were publicized on Sunday, the Prime Minister’s Office released the following statement: Israel appreciates the democratic process in Egypt and respects the results of the presidential elections. Israel looks forward to continuing cooperation with the Egyptian government on the basis of the peace treaty between the two countries, which is a joint interest of both peoples and contributes to regional stability.
