NYC: MTA Approves Subway and Bus Fare Increase

mta bus.jpgThe MTA has approved another round of fare and toll hikes, despite the protests of city straphangers – WCBSTV is reporting. Base fares for single rides, however, will remain a $2 for at least another two years.

But many of the 8 million daily passengers who ride the subway, bus and commuter trains will be forced to cough up more for transportation for the third time since 2003. Motorists who use E-Z pass will also be affected.

Monthly unlimited-ride metrocards are rising to $81, up from $76. The 7-day metrocards will cost $25, a $1 increase. E-Z pass tolls for cars will increase by 3.8 percent and LIRR and Metro-North fares jump up between 3.7 percent and 4.2 percent.

The MTA says that it needs to raise fares and tolls to keep up with steep rises in costs to run public transportation.

  1. I agree with the hikes. Cost of the trip is a fraction of the benefit (due to public subsidization). It’s time for riders to be paying more of their fair share. I think fair value of entry into the subway is between $5 and $10. If the subway were privately owned, that is where the price would be…

  2. zeveleh i am sure that if you had to ride in the buses and subways you would not want to pay $5 or $10 you would also want to pay $2. if they are going to raise the price they should clean up too!!

  3. Problem is that it is tourists, generally, who purchase the $2 fares. So, while Ciy residents and others who commute daily, the ones whose money from taxes and daily commuting already support the MTA, will be hurt, the ones who use the system on a temporary basis will have their fare stay the same.

  4. if they will hike up the rate, then they should increase the service.for example-no more rats partying around on the tracks,no more homeless lying around, trains that run on time……….the list goes on and on!!

  5. The governor intervened on this one, so he looks good to the tourists who will continue to pay $2 per ride. Very few New Yorkers pay the $2 fare with unlimited cards and other discounts. We are the ones who will pay the increases, but the governor, with all his recent problems in the polls, can come out looking good on this case.
