(UPDATE BELOW ORIGINAL STORY) This evening, the Lakewood Township Committee will be discussing an ordinance (Town law) that would require annual inspections of all rental units in Lakewood. The motivation for this proposal was to address the threat to public safety of overcrowded and unsafe residential units that are being rented out by unscrupulous landlords.
In the judgement of the Lakewood Vaad, the proposal creates more problems than it solves as it targets the innocent along with the violators. The Vaad has made the Kehilla’s opposition crystal clear to members of the Township Committee.
While Committeemen Meir Lichtenstein, Menashe Miller and Senator Singer have publicly committed to vote against the bill, there will be vocal support to pass it.
Tonight’s meeting is taking place at the Municipal Building, 231 Third Street, Main Auditorium, at 7:30PM.
There is a public portion at the very beginning where comments from residents are welcome.
UPDATE: 11:30PM EST: Yeshivaworld has learned that the ordinance has failed 3-2.

This is a gret bill and should be passed. Menashe and Co are just under pressure from “vaad”. I Live in lakewood these guys are renting to lowlifes, and drugdealers and turning Lakewood into a ghetto. “they have made their opposition crystal clear” who cares they are destroying Lakewood. If there would be inspections then all these overcrowding and illegals would be minimized at lease. Guys would be held at least remotely responsible for what they are doing to Lakewood.
The Lakewood community could take lemons and make lemonade. Properly trained Yungerleit could make a lucrative living inspecting apartments during Bein Hasdorim.
I think the inspections should be looking for multiple families and many unrelated people living together in single family dwellings, and safety violations. I don’t think it should be looking for large families in small apartments such as those in our community.I think these inspections are a good idea.
Lakewood People:
Here is your chance to stand up and do what you believe in. Do what is needed and don’t whine later….

It doesn’t make adifference who owns the buildings. The illegals have been living there for ages. Do you think some yungerman is going to buy an old dilapidated house up route 88? The owners of these buildings are not “doing anything to Lakewood”

Wouldn’t that be convenient. Pick and choose what part of the law to enforce. Look, either they will make the law or not.
Its a shame that the commitee was even arranged. At least put some landlords on this commitee to come up with an effective ordinance. Township commitee put “fallen angels’ committee together in an irresponsible matter. It was very flawed. They had no grasp on the practical aspects of the rental business.
I am sure that the inspection department knows exactly where those overcrowded houses are. They can act effectivly now (but for some reason they are not) This ordinance would not have done anytyhing extra about it except open a can of worms for other issues! There are laws on the books now enforce them!
#5: How many units do you own?
Yatzmich, who said anything about dilapidated house off 88? if they were only there I would agree but they are all over town and in houses that yugerleit would have no problem living in
read this new twist…….
the main reason why they would do this is to rake in another few hundred thousand dollars from co inspections, besides the astronimical raises in taxes, if u realy care to help the town just focus on the illegalls in the town, which eats up all the tax money for instance their school system has numurious tuters per ilegal child, what do u want from the lanlords, if they wouldn’t own it who would own it? don’t answer me that end users would buy it , that’s totaly not true in most of these rental areas , and basicaly just to end off , live and let live, and make sure its not jelousy which is geting in th way…..
Judge all you want!!!
My wife and I bought a town house in a non-jewish neighborhood right after we got married. It’s not much but IY”H it will help when we want to buy our own house for ourselves.
We rent to a nice black family, and don’t want to be punished for the deeds of others.
We just want to make the most out of our situation. We can’t afford these fees. Why should we suffer for others issues?
There are legitimate landlords in town.
TO ALL THE VERT SMART PEOPLE BLOGGING ON THIS ARTICLE DID TOU EVER THINK THAT EVERY PERSON WHO RENTS HIS BASEMENT ILLEGALLY DOES THE SAME THING!!! WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN WHEN THE PEOPLE YOU DON’T WANT IN YOUR NEIBORHOOD START COMPLAININIG ABOUT THAT WILL THEY BE WRONG OR RIGHT?
WHAT A BUNCH OF DOUBLE STANDARD PEOPLE YOU ARE!
“FALLEN ANGELS” camden mayor?!!
Are you kidding me here? Where the heck were YOU when the committee was meeting?!! Where were ANY OF YOU when they were meeting???!! Have you forgotten what was already stated???? Shall I remind you, yet again??!! THESE MEETINGS WERE PUBLIC; ITS BULL DINKY THAT SUDDENLY EVERYONE HAS COMPLAINTS AND COMMENTS; YOU SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN OFF YOUR TAILS AND ATTENDED! AND AGAIN, THE COMMITTEE WAS MADE UP OF LANDLORDS AND ORTHODOX MEMBERS CAMDEN MAYOR!!! Lets hope to G-d you can actually READ cuz your not reading what anyone posts!!!
Vehicles are inspected for safety every single day of the year folks; WHETHER THEY PASS OR NOT!! WHETHER THEY ARE SAFE OR NOT; WHETHER THEY ARE BRAND NEW OR NOT. Not a problem is it???? Nobody complains because its for the PUBLIC safety of all drivers – SAME PRINCIPLE with the RENTAL inspections folks – BIG DEAL its get inspected, what the heck are you trying to hide here?!!!
If you don’t like the ‘INVASION OF YOUR PRIVACY’ move to a town you don’t control and see what rules THEY have!
This bill IS NOT DEAD, so surprise, surprise. Its going to get passed, its going to be adjusted, so look for a future in it. AND WHY NOT TRY SOMETHING NEW; ATTEND THE MEETINGS, USE YOUR VOCAL CORDES AND DO SOMETHING BESIDES TYPING YOUR COMMENTS WHICH GET NOWHERE FAST. Who cares what you have to say: BACK IT UP WITH SOME REAL ACTION! This can’t be done by the twelve DEDICATED folks who gave up their own personal time to actually try and improve the GHETTO that parts of Lakewood have become. WE DON’T CARE IF 1,500 OF YOU SHOW UP, BUT FOR G-D’S SAKE, SHOW UP!!!
If not, don’t bother complaining, because it means nothing and falls on deaf ears. If you have nothing to hide, and something to offer, DO IT, OTHERWISE, you just sound like a bitter old landlord trying to skirt around the friggin laws that are in place to protect the rest of us poor unfortunates that are forced to reside next to the crap that others rent to. Do a bloody back ground check for pete’s sake!! Then you won’t have any friggin problems with your tenants and who to blame for the horrific conditions these homes are left in. AS ALREDY STATED, THERE ARE GOOD LANDLORDS OUT THERE, BUT THE BAD ONES ARE THE ONES MAKING IT BAD FOR THE REST OF YOU, NOT THE FRIGGIN PEOPLE WHO ARE SICK TO DEATH OF THEIR PROPERTY VALUES DROPPING; YOU SHOULD CARE ABOUT WHAT THEY SAY AND DEAL WITH IT AND NOT WHAT THE LANDLORDS ARE COLLECTIVELY CRYING ABOUT. IF YOUR A GOOD LANDLORD, YOU SHOULD DRAG YOURSELF TO THE MEETINGS!! WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU – OTHERWISE, JUST BE QUIET AND GO BACK TO YOUR GRAY AREAS – WE HAVE WORK TO DO.

I hope they are prepared to take this all the way to the Supreme Court which will cost the township and the residents a whole lot more that they can hope to make off the inspections. I meean, this is a major invasion of privacy!
It’s almost like they are going to dictate how many kids we can have – 3 bedroom home, not more than 5 kids, etc… And now that my mother-in-law passed away, I certainly can’t think of having my father-in-law move in with us… that would be multiple families.
The ACLU will pick this case up so fast, especially if the summonses will be issued to HIspanics mostly… Just think where we are headed with this before we jump in blindly (Which is something this township tends to do – for examply that white elephant they put up in the Industrial Park for the day laborers which is standing empty)
