Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) urged deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to appoint a special prosecutor for the federal probe into the Trump campaign’s ties with Russian officials — warning that failing to do so will lead the public to “rightly suspect” that FBI Director James Comey’s surprise firing Tuesday “was part of a cover-up.”
“The only way the American people can have faith in this investigation is for it to be led by a fearless independent special prosecutor,” Schumer told reporters at the Capitol. “If Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein does not appoint an independent special prosecutor, every American will rightly suspect that the decision to fire Director Comey was part of a cover-up.”

Not that I have a smidgen of respect for this fool of a partisan politician who is a disgrace to the entire Legislative Branch of government, but he has a point. When an investigation has political overtones, allowing the regular systems to handle it is a great risk. Depending on the political forces, decisions and conclusions can fly either direction, and the standard of truth loses its reliability. Not just should any investigations regarding Trump be assigned to a special prosecutor, but all the garbage relating to Hillary should also get such assignment. The government has built in several mechanisms to police itself. But we know that some do not work, or are notoriously inefficient. There is a deserving place for special prosecutors who lack the political agendas.
Having noted that I do agree with the special prosecutor, I again state my embarrassment that this political hack is still in a position of power. He is a shameful party hack, and is more concerned with that agenda than with assisting his constituents with responsible voting. I wish him early retirement. Yesterday is not too soon.
