Poland: 200 Jewish Kevarim Found Under Water

kevarim.jpgConstruction workers in a Polish town have reportedly found 200 Jewish Kevarim at the bottom of a water reservoir, the JTA is reporting.

The Kevarim were discovered on Nov. 27 while workers excavated an area for renovation in the historic market square of Kepno. The stones, hidden for decades, apparently were removed from the town’s Jewish cemetery and used by the Nazis to line the bottom of the small reservoir. There was no immediate word on the condition of the stones.

  1. If the ‘stones…were removed from the town’s Jewish cemetery’ Then the story is about 200 ‘Jewish Matzaivos” not l”ol Kevorim!

  2. If you look at the JTA web site which is the source for this story, we are talking tombstones only.

BUT! “Kevarim” makes for a more exciting headline.

  3. Baki,
I think the intention was Lo”l =lo oleinu, as opposed to LOL.
The picture used at the top of the article looks a lot like the bais oilum in Prague and not like matzaivos on the bottom of a reservoir.

On the halachis aspect, I believe Matzaivos are assur b’hana’ah. Are you allowed to drink from the reservoir?
