Starting today, New York shoppers will pay no sales tax on clothes and shoes on items costing $110 or less.

Previously, state sales tax was charged on clothes and footwear priced $55 or higher.

The change means shoppers get a break from the 4 percent state sales tax as well as the 0.375 percent sales tax from the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District.

The MCTD applies in the five boroughs as well as Long Island and Westchester, Dutchess and Orange counties.

New York City had already eliminated its 4.5 percent sales tax on clothes and shoes under $110.

Last year, the state sacrificed the $110 threshold for a year to meet a budget shortfall.

The tax break is good on clothing and also includes yarn and fabric.
