Are Lakewood Bias Crimes On The Rise?

IMG_4295.jpg(Click on image to ENLARGE) Lakewood has recently seen an upsurge in criminal activity that police are investigating as bias crimes. Last weeks assault on a fourteen-year-old boy, as well as swastikas painted on Bais Faiga, a racially charged comment scrawled on a car, and swastikas painted on a Jewish home & mailbox – has residents wondering what is going on.

Earlier last week, unknown vandals painted swastikas and anti-Semitic epithets on the back of the Bais Faiga (Gratter) School building. Yeshivaworld attempted to speak with the head maintenance director of the school, but declined comment.

According to The Voice, the school reportedly called the police upon discovering the vandalism – who responded immediately. A report was filled out, and pictures taken. This crime is being classified and investigated by police as a bias crime.

Last week, someone used red spray paint to write “Heil Hitler” across the passenger side of a silver Honda parked on Woehr Avenue, police said. The car is owned by a local Jewish family. The Ocean County Sheriff’s Department Criminalistics Investigation Unit was notified and is investigating what police consider a bias incident as well.

Additionally, Yeshivaworld has learned that a third bias incident occurred in the area of Park Avenue & 4th Street. Residents awoke one morning to find the front door, and mail-boxes of a Jewish home scrawled with swastikas and hate messages. One message read “Hitlers back”.

Lieutenant Joseph Isnardi of the Lakewood Police Department told The Voice that while the bias crimes are of concern, they are fairly commonplace in Lakewood. The police department does investigate the crimes, but usually finds that the vandalism has been done by kids, said Isnardi.

  1. esav sonei es yaakov. they will always hate us either way so we might as well be good yidden and do what we have to do and realize that H-shem is trying to send us a message.

  2. I think the issue is not the police, there is only so much that the police can do. The fact is that it is a very frightening thought that such incidents are occurring nowadays- in America. They have not only been happening in Lakewood but in other areas as well.

  3. of course there are more bias crimes where jews live. you wouldnt expect someone to spray swastikas in the heart of texas where there are little or no jews!

  4. Oy. Until the advent of the many luxurious homes being built throughout Lakewood by and for the frum population, Lakewood has been much more peaceful. These homes give the non-Jews MORE to seethe and drool about. Isn’t it largely economy related? Those who can’t pay their bills/homelss, unemployed/seem to have no future, look to find a scapegoat and who better to be chosen scapegoat, than those living luxuriously?

  5. If this was anti-black graffiti you would already have massive riots or demonstrations, like in the Jenna 6 case. We let ourselves be taken too lightly, and if we don’t respond to these little shoots, they will get worse and nastier. My impression is a-s attacks increased dramaticaly after iranian hitler started speaking up. To be anti-jew all of a sudden became more accepted, just because a major state figurehead is doing it without any fear or retaliation.

  6. I’m not a talmid chochom by any stretch of the imagination, so forgive me if the source is wrong, but I heard from someone who said over a Rosh (I think) concerning the ostentatious display of material success is a DIRECT cause of the overt show of anti-semitism. Again, forgive me if it is not a Rosh, but someone who is more a bukki in Rishonim can maybe comment on this.

  7. WEALTH?? Last I heard, Hashem causes a wall of Goyishe sina to rise whenever we move too far into their territory. Many greay Yidden have been wealthy, all the way back to the AVOS. It’s our middos and yiras shomayim, fellas, not the money!! Take responsibility.

You are right but I did until 2 years ago for 23 years. I also shared a relationship with the Lakewood PD for many years….

If we put the writings aside, unfortunately some in our community’s desperate need to display their wealth, causing others to seethe and drool, is fact and not fiction.

    Aizehu Chacham Haroeh Es Hanolad.

    Lets be leveled and sane.

  10. funny thing. as soon as the “fun unzere” started kissing up to the township officials and many of them stated showing up in yarmulkas to birthday and pajama parties so everyone can give each other plastic photo-op smiles–is when crime started going up. its not rocket science–there needs to be a buisness-like relationship here of what needs to get done in a professional way. when you start becoming chummy chummy with govt officials on a personal level as a strategy to develop a working relationship you immediately torpedo your best opportunity to get stuff done. its a bad decision from the strategists who are running this. unless someone reliable out there knows if the rabbonim of lakewood recommended this approach, and if so i rest my case but if its the idea of “as-konim” well they are just that…

Is it not within the category of MIDOS not pleasing to The One Above, when we live in a manner causing others, Jews and non-Jews alike, to seethe and drool?
