(Updates below story) 11:45AM EST: A source tells Yeshivaworld that a few hundred students at the Lakewood High-School (public school) are rioting at this time for an unknown reason. Reports of Lakewood police officers being assaulted as well. Numerous PD agencies responding. (East 7th Street @ Somerset Avenue) Further details to be posted shortly.
UPDATE 6:00PM EST: On Monday November 12, 2007 at approximately 10:59AM, Lakewood Police Officers responded to the Lakewood High School for a report of trespassers. Upon the initial officers arrival they were directed by School security to several trespassers. The two were both Juveniles, one being a currently suspended student, and a non-student.
Both were placed into custody. These individuals were alleged to be involved in the assault of High School Students and High School Security Guards.
While the officers were interviewing the security guards they were directed to the high school cafeteria for a large fight. In the school the officers encountered approx. 100 students engaged in fights. According to the school there were approx. 300 students eating during that lunch period.
The officers called for assistance and the entire day shift responded.(approx. 25 officers, patrol and detective personnel, Deputy Chief Smith and Chief Lawson) During the incident Captain Greg Miick, Lt. Michael Dennis and PO. Edgardo Vega were assaulted, along with High School Facility. The officers were assisted by Police Officers from Howell Twp. Police Department, Jackson Twp. Police Department, Toms River Police Department, and Brick Twp. Police Department.
12 individuals were arrested, with one being an adult. Arrests ranged from Aggravated assault on Officers, Aggravated Assault on School facility, Riot, Failure to Disperse, Terrorist Threats, and Disorderly Persons.
The follow-up investigation is being conducted by Lakewood Police Detective Steven Wexler.

Apparently, a huge fight broke out two hours ago and police from nearby towns were needed to quash the violent situation..
No wonder the Lakewood Public School System isn’t getting great marks.. They should chuck these thugs out of the schools and send them to Camden where they would be a better fit – and make our streets safer (and more educated) while they’re at it.

THE SITUATION WAS VERY VIOLENT RIGHT AWAY I SAW THE OFFICERS RUNNING THEN THEY HAD TO USE PEPPER SPRAY TO STOP THE VOILENCE IT WAS AT EVERY END OF THE SCHOOL IT WAS GOING OUT OF CONTROL THEN THEY CALLED IN BACK UP FROM THE NEIGHBORING TOWNSHIPS
I must say it’s very comferting to see this down the block from my house.This area was hit two weeks ago with over 10 break-ins in one night.What is going on in this town ????

I think they should close down the Lakewood public school system and export these ‘model students’ to Jackson or Brick. (everytime one of them gets knocked off the press calls them a model student who ‘unfortunatly was caught in the wrong time wrong place)
Is the guy who beat up a local Rebbi an alumnus of this school?
I wonder if such a thing would ever happen in a frum school, maybe that’s why they don’t like funding them
What’s even more outrageous about this incident is that the District may now be required to provide these Bozos with out-of-school instruction (see NJAC § 6A:16-10.2) when they’re going to be suspended/expelled.. So besides for all our tax dollars these Bozos wasted today, it’s now going to cost us even more!!

A most efficient use of tax dollars would be to have the local public works slap iron bars on all the windows while all the classes are in session. Rename it the Lakewood Youth Rehabilitation Center. Turning it into a jail will simply save all those costly intermediate steps between what the students are doing now and where they will be in a few years.
To all you trolls: just kidding! There must be at least 10 or 20 students who will not end up in jail.
camden mayor- if they closed down the school system your tax dollars would still be used for bussing to send them to out of township schools so if you think you would be getting away without paying school tax you are wrong.
As for you thinkingclearly- I don’t think there are many places left in town that are not “located within the jewish area?” anymore. Now I went to Lakewood Schools as a child and I have to say I got a good education. I even went on to other colleges after High School and then served my country after that. Now I am back working in public safety. Remember to thank them …stop bashing them so much.

Response to 23 – At least they would get educated. The esteemed “APP” had some comments by some who said most kids are good they play ball on the basketball team.” In Jackson and in other towns good kids are the ones that know what means to be educated and put in some work. I see these kids going 2 school every day no books no HW. I spoke with many from their community they are just as upset over the “education” that they are receiving. That school is a joke and it would be great to give those kids a chance and move them to a real school system.
Another point in Lakewood outside of the yeshiva community if you look around at the clientele left in this town you would have to say that 75% of them really are Camden, Trenton and Asbury Park citizens…. It is the Lakewoods School Board responsiblity to make sure they are getting educated.
I heard that there were 2 gangs of students arguing, and someone started throwing benches. It escalated to smoke bombs, I even heard that someone supposedly tossed yogurt at one of the principals…..

Violence such as this was not unheard of in European yeshivot either. When the Netziv was retiring from his positon of head of the Volozhin yeshiva, he desperatly wanted his son to assume the position. The students however, by and large favord R. Yosef Ber Soleveitchik with a more than de minimus minority opting for the Netziv’s son. On more than one occaision, actual brawls broke out in the Volozhin Beth Medrash during disputes on this issue. Tables were turned over and fist fights occured. Of course those were machloket l’sheim Shamayim, so they are ok, right?
Oi,vey what a bunch of narishkeit. At least they don’t go to a madrassah tolearn to be terrorists!!! And that story about voloshin is probably exaggerated or he read it in Making of a Gadol which is not all that accurate.
