Chris Christie, a Mitt Romney uber-surrogate, says same-gender marriage should be on the ballot in the Garden State this November:
“Let’s put the question of same sex marriage on the ballot,” Christie said.
“I believe in the institution of marriage. I realize this is my personal opinion. …Rather than have stalemate and deadlock on this issue, let’s put it on the ballot.”
“It shouldn’t be decided by 121 people in Trenton.
“While I know I could stop this by mself, I suggest an alternative,” the governor added. “Let’s be governed by the will of the people on this. Let’s let the people decide. I would urge every Republican in the legislature to put it on the ballot.”
It is at minimum a sign of the times, as they say, as Christie approaches a likely re-election bid in 2013, and perhaps attempts to put the state in play for Republicans in the fall.

So far, that seems to be an effective way to block “gay marriage”, even in solid blue states such as California. Thus the Democrats will probably object. Furthermore, while it will “energize” Obama’s already energized base (especially as Obama moves to the left), a referendum will energize the “red” base, which at present seems not especially enthused with the likely winner (Gingrich or Romney) of the Republican nomination contest.
Democrats will undoubtedly resist this as a “political ploy”. And of course it is, but by resisting it they will once again demonstrate their contempt for actual democracy.
