Approximately 15,000 breeding ducks were burned alive in a fire last night near Swan Lake – reports the Times Herald Record.
Towering flames that could be seen half way across the county ripped through a warehouse rented by the Hudson Valley Foie Gras, destroying the 30-by-450 foot warehouse, a garage containing equipment, and a car.
The fire also damaged two mobile homes, where workers were staying at the plant on Fittkau Road. Nobody was injured. Several volunteer fire companies arrived shortly after the fire erupted at midnight, but were helpless to stop the flames. No water was available on site.
Hoses had to be run for a mile to Airport Road. Tanker trucks shuttled back and forth from a pond at the fire training center three miles away.
Investigators believe the fire started in the garage, where the machinery and the heating system for the plant was located. The fire then jumped to the main building.
Exhaust fans used to cool the building sucked the flames through the three stories. The building and garage burned to the foundation.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Pennell said.
The lost ducks were specially selected from France and used exclusively for breeding, Hudson Valley owner Izzy Yanay said.

A duck goes into a shop and asks, “Can I have some lip salve please?”
The shop assistant asks, “Will you be paying cash?”
The duck replies, “No thank you, just put it on my bill.”
Where was this place? I was not too far from there this past summer.
PROBABLY OFF OF AIRPORT ROAD NEAR THE SULLIVAN COUNTY AIRPORT BETWEEN RT 17B AND RT 55
To all who are poking fun at this tragedy, please keep this in mind. There were 15,000 living creatures that died a horrible death (being burned alive is not a very pleasant thought). Are we not, as Jews, supposed to be more compassionate to the fate of other living creatures? Also, this was a large fire and could have been a disaster for the volunteer firemen in Sullivan County who gave freely of their time. Anyone who knows the area will see that 12786 is the zip code for White Lake, New York, and I have a personal interest in this area. As many of you also vacation in this area, you should be grateful to those volunteer firemen who come out day and night and risk their lives to fight fires and help us especially during the summer months when the population in the area is at a peak and there seems to be numerous car accidents. I know that many of those volunteers happen to be Jewish.
Flatbush Bubby, I stand corrected. This fire was off of Rte. 55, past Airport Road, not too far from Camp Toras Chesed on Rte. 55.
And what about the Yiddish owner that might have lost big time! Where do the basics of Yiddishkeit and Mentchlichkeit dissappear to on the internet???
GOM!! Welcome back! 😀
