Walmart Pulls Popular Baby Formula Enfamil After 10-Day-Old Missouri Infant Dies

Walmart stores across the country are pulling a popular baby formula from shelves after officials say it may have killed a 10-day-old infant in Springfield, Mo.

Avery Cornett died Sunday of a rare infection that is sometimes linked to bacteria found in commercial formula, reports said.

He was taken to the hospital on Friday after his family said he appeared lethargic and seemed to have a stomach ache, the Lebanon Daily Record reported. Preliminary tests showed that he had contracted the bacteria Cronobacter sakazii.

He was taken off of life support on Sunday.

While it is not clear that the formula was contaminated, Walmart officials pulled the product voluntarily out of “an abundance of caution” a Walmart spokeswoman told the Daily Record.

Officials are testing the batch of powdered formula that Avery was fed, along with the water used to prepare it for the baby and the environmental conditions it was mixed in.

A spokesman for Enfamil said the formula was safe.

“That batch was tested for cronobacter, and it came out negative, and we’ve gone back and reconfirmed that in our records,” Chris Perrille of Mead Johnson Nutrition, the company that makes Enfamil, told the TV station.

Customers can exchange Enfamil Newborn formula in 12.5-ounce cans for another brand or get a full refund.

The news quickly spread across parenting blogs, where parents questioned how risky the formula was.

  1. They found fecal matter on the inside walls of the can. This was sabotage and someone is going to prison once they figure out the culprit. SICK!
