Tuscon: Jewish Synagogue Teaches Through Technology

webcam.jpgSynagogue members at Congregation Bet Shalom are using the Internet to communicate with their own Rabbi in Jerusalem. For the past three years they’ve chosen to connect with Rabbi David Ebstein through a webcam. They physically only see him in Tucson three to four times a year.

“At first it was pretty strange and it was hard to get used to teaching a class where it wasn’t in the same room as people and when there wasn’t instantaneous response,” Ebstein said.

About a dozen adults meet every two weeks for education classes, communicating with the Rabbi through the eye of a camera.  But with technology comes difficulty. Sunday was the first time ever that a session wasn’t dropped.

  1. #1: I agree, both from davening in the fabulous Rabbi’s shul a couple of times when I was in Tuscon on business, and from hearing him give a drasha in his brother-in-law’s shul (to which I belong).
