Council Member Simcha Felder is urging the community to be aware of DECEPTON BURGLARY, a relatively new type of crime where con artists posing as utility workers, delivery men and women, or home improvement contractors gain entry to homes and businesses in order to steal money and other valuables – as reported HERE on YW.

“Deception burglary is especially dangerous because we often trust men and women who look official. Unfortunately, these crooks take advantage of our trust and burglarize our homes,” Felder said.

Often times, deception burglars use deception just to get into the victim’s home or business. Once inside, they can immediately demand money or other valuables. Other times they can distract the victim or claim to be inspecting areas of the home or business while they search the place for cash and valuables.

Here are some NYPD tips on preventing yourself from being a victim:

1. Be wary of unannounced visitors, including utility workers, maintenance personnel, delivery people and other uniform personnel.
2. Never automatically open a door to strangers.
3. Use your peephole or intercom to communicate with and identify visitors.
4. Ask to view photo identification card before opening your door.
5. If unsure if a person is from a utility company, call to verify.
6. Have a free security survey of your home or business conducted by the NYPD Crime Prevention Officer. Call your local precinct for more information.
7. If you think you are a victim of Deception Burglary, call 911.
