The New York City transit agency has begun a two-month trial of a 35-foot-long electric hybrid bus. The Hybrid bus took its first drive on Thursday, riding up and down 42nd Street in busy Manhattan. If it tests well, the MTA plans to purchase several. The hybrid bus uses an electric-powered turbine and standard diesel to get eight to 10 miles per gallon. It is quieter, promises to reduce operating costs and can go 125 miles before the battery needs recharging.

This is great idea. Studies have shown that the cost/emissions caused by charging the battery is less than the same if powered by standard fuel.
