NYPD Recovers One Of Stolen Vans That Sparked 9/11 Anniversary Security Fears

Police have recovered one of the three missing vans that raised security fears as the city marks the tenth anniversary of 9/11.

A dark green Chevy van stolen from a World Trade Center contractor was found Saturday night, police said.

The van was stolen Sept. 2 from a construction site on 94th St. near Grand Central Parkway in Queens after thieves found keys hidden on a stored ladder. They loaded the van with more than $60,000 worth of equipment, cops said.

The van was found empty Saturday about 10:45 p.m. parked on Coolidge Ave. in Queens.

“They are believing it was taken for strictly tools,” a police source said.

Cops are still searching for a second van stolen from the same company a day earlier. When the driver of that van stepped out to speak to coworkers near an on-ramp to the Long Island Expressway, a thief jumped in and took off.

Cops are also looking for a white rental van with Oklahoma plates stolen from a storage facility in Jersey City.

Suspicions were raised by the sophistication of the plot, which included disabling surveillance cameras and removing DVDs of security footage, police said.

“We don’t have any reason to think those thefts are associated with this threat,” Commissioner Raymond Kelly told NY1 Sunday.
