Ads In Orthodox Newspapers Slam Weprin, Obama, And Give Strong Endorsement To Turner

Two full page ads have been placed in the major Orthodox Jewish weekly newspapers, including Yated Ne’eman, Hamodia, giving strong endorsements to Bob Turner, and slamming David Weprin, and President Obama.

One ad headline reads “Obama thinks he can fix the economy on a bus. He already threw Israel under it.”

The words are placed on top of the (now) famous photo of President Obama with his shoes up on the desk in the Oval Office, while chatting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The photo caused heavy controversy when it was released, as many Israeli TV newscasters interpreted the photo as an “insult” to Israel.

They saw the incident as somewhat akin to an earlier incident, when an Iraqi reporter threw a shoe at President Bush in Baghdad.

It is considered an insult in the Arab world to show the sole of your shoe to someone. It is not a Jewish custom necessarily, but Israel feels enough a part of the Middle East after 60 years to be insulted too.

Another full page ad screams “As an Orthodox Jew, David Weprin is expected to answer to a higher authority…(And we don’t mean President Obama)”.

It should be noted, that when the ad mentions “as an Orthodox Jew”, it is referring to Weprin announcing that as “an Orthodox Jew” – he was proud to cast his vote for gay marriage in New York.

The ad is signed by approximately 25 prominent members of the Orthodox Jewish community.

  1. I didn’t recognize any of the names of the people who placed the adds. Were any of them important people? Perhaps prominent Democratic office holders? Heads of major organizations? Gedolei Torah?

The significance of a candidate’s supporters buying adds supporting the candidate is somewhat limited (except for the media, whose solvency is thereby enhanced).

  2. If turner wins the national media will pick up on obama and note that he lost because of his treatment of Israel. We need a major turnout so I am asking bechol looshin shel bakoosha to please pick yourselves up 09/13 and vote for turner. 1 vote next tuesday is worth more then 100 posts on ywn (of course mechilas Kovoidcha ywn)

  3. I cannot believe that as usual we are throwing a fellow jew under the bus. There were no other kaporos out there to send obama a message that we have to destroy a person that has consistently delivered for our community and is a true ohaiv yisroel? Turner is an unknown who is using our insecurities over obama against us. These so called “reps” are concerned about Israel but they are also wealthy republicans who don’t want their tax breaks taken away. So please don’t be swayed by flashy headlines and think about the consequences about sinas chinom against a fellow jew.

  4. akuperma,
Some of them are known Agudah activists. You can consider them crossover endorsements, being that they usually endorse Democrats.

  5. To akuperma:

Actually in Queens those are prominent people who run most of the jewish orgs here, including several on the artscroll governors board. Obviously you’re not from queens, otherwise you would have heard of people like Shafran

    Vote Turner

  6. If Turner wins, it messes NY State Democrats redistricting plans, since they plan to eliminate Weiner’s seat as the Democrats seat, from the 2 losts seats that NY must split between R’s and D’s. If it becomes R, the D’s will need to find another D seat to eliminate.

  7. akuperma -I recognized several names, including philanthropists, community activists and Pinny Lipschutz- The owner of the Yated Ne’eman.

  8. #2 Gedolei Torah with few exceptions do not give public endorsements to political candidates.

#4 Turner may be an unknown but unfortunately Weprin is known….and not in a positive way. He completely separates his personal life (Yiddishkeit) from his public life (True Party believer and follower).

Weprin talks a good game but you can bet your bottom dollar that he will do whatever the Dem bosses say…after all THEY chose him.

  9. They are for the most part prominant Queens activists and more importantly constituents of that district (of which Weprin is not). Those voters that actually will vote in this race will probably recognize the names.

  10. Akuperma’s liberalism has made him unable to see clearly. The 25 names are of people who showed guts. They didn’t identify themselves as leaders or representatives of anything. They spent their own money to make a principled stand. Why not concentrate on the message and not the messengers.”

I for one am impressed that they took the bold initiative to articulate what most of our community feels. They did it because they care. Not for politics. Not for money and NOT to impress you. Your in the minority. Get on the bus or get thrown under it by the president.

  11. Just wait until the White House sees this ad.

No funding for Brooklyn. And wait until later today when the Hikind endorsement for Turner comes out.

    Oy.

  12. Weprin must be defeated at all costs. It’s not just the gay issue, which is not just “a vote”.

This mushchis now “clarified his position” by saying that its “only a civil union, and not marriage”…

    Really?

Mr. Weprin, how about that un-doctored, and genuine photo of you kneeling down onto a Manhattan Street posing for a photo with one of the worst types of gays – dressed in a woman’s skirt, while proudly smiling, and holding a gay flag.

All this while he wears a yarmulka on his head?

    For shame.

We need to bulldoze him out of the race, and any Frum people like Asher Taub and his ilk who support him.

  13. #18- Why does YWN need to mention something CLEARLY WRITTEN in the ad?

    Get your eyes checked.

This article doesn’t write 99.9% of the ad.

  14. #7- if Turner even comes close, it turns all redistricting plans upside down since it suggests that every district might be “in play”. Gerrymandering requires being able to count on people to vote predictably, and if a solid Democratic district is contestable, neither party will know what to expect.

#11- if I’m a liberal, then Sarah Palen is probably a communist — opposing a discredited president is hardly a bold step, and rejecting Weprin’s attempts to be a “frum liberal” doesn’t require any creative or daring thought processes

  15. Shnitzel,

In your first comment you said the endorsers spent their own money on the ad. That’s not true. The headline is at best misleading and seems intentionally so.

  16. #22- To set the record straight, there are two ads. One is paid by Turner campaign, and one is paid by private people (the ad with the names attached).

    Understood?

  17. I am sorry that I live in another Congressional district. I would vote for Mr. Turner in a heartbeat. We need every Republican that can be voted in. Mr. Weprin if elected will do the bidding of the Democratic party bosses who cling to the sinking and dangerous Obama.

  18. #4- its not sinas chinam to not vote for a liberal gay supporting torah trashing “frum” jew. one doesnt have to vote for every “jew” who puts his name on the ballot just because he is jewish. it is sinas atzmicha and sinas hatora to vote for someone who will raise your taxes support agendas that put yidden in eretz yisroel in danger and openly promote the worst type of unnatural self made (see ramban on [passuk lemaan sefos haravah es hatzimaya in haazinu) taavah
vote your conscience, leave religion out of the race
