Update On Hurricane From NYC OEM [Thursday 6:00PM EST]

OEM continues to closely monitor Hurricane Irene as it approaches the East Coast. As of 11 AM, Thursday, Hurricane Irene was passing over the Bahamas, and moving north northwest at 13 miles per hour. Irene is currently a Category 3 hurricane. While the forecast remains uncertain, there is now a strong possibility New York City will experience hurricane or tropical storm conditions this weekend.

OEM urges New Yorkers to find out if they live in a hurricane evacuation zone and take steps to prepare for heavy rain, storm surge, and strong winds. Make sure your emergency supply kits and Go Bags are stocked and ready to go with supplies like water, non-perishable food, a first aid kit, flashlights, a battery-operated radio, and extra batteries.
